Has Dr. House ever lost a patient?

Asked by SuperMouse (30845points) February 14th, 2009

Near as I can tell every single episode of House goes a little something like this:

1. Patient admitted with some odd and quite possibly deadly symptoms.
2. House and team misdiagnose patient a minimum of four times.
3. Dr. House has a brilliant epiphany that leads to the patient being save.

So, has he ever lost a patient? Does the plot ever change at all? Does the brilliant curmudgeon get on anyone else’s nerves?

Yes he has. I forget which episode, but I think in season 2.

I think he did lose one from what I have seen- but I only catch the re-runs.

If I am not mistaken the brilliant epiphany can come from some of his team as well.

His character is one of the best I have seen- a perfect dry sarcasm.

The one about the cop who couldn’t stop laughing ended with the cop dying.
Euporia pt. 1 was right at the end of season 2.

He lost a baby in one episode where he had to sacrifice patient one to save another.

He’s lost a few patients, yeah. I think it would definitely be more realistic if he lost a few more along the way, but the fact that he doesn’t is kind of the point of the show. He’s supposed to be one of the most brilliant doctors in the entire country, but who fails miserably at life in general.

He can be annoying but the writers do a good job of depicting his faults as well as his skills. I think he has lost patients as well as face in several episodes.

The series is getting very predictable and formulaic. I find myself watching less often and focussing more on how he does the American accent. Sometimes I think that the effort he puts into that apparently is reflected by his often tense expressions. And he does seem to be clairvoyant at about minute 43.

The plot is definitely repetitive. I’ve noticed that the networks recycle plots for their shows. You can watch two or three different sit-coms on NBC and the story will be the same. They just change a few things hoping we will not notice. How stupid do they think we are?

I might be wrong but I think the guy Dr House woke up from a coma ended up dying too.

It wasn’t Lupus.

Dr. House would lose his license in 3 seconds in real life, aside from the fact that he models the exact opposite of modern medicine. The pick one diagnosis and follow it until you’re wrong style just doesn’t fit with what we affectionately call the differential diagnosis. Ugghhhh.

bluemukaki's avatar

@shilolo: I agree, being right isn’t important when being wrong means someone is dead. House is a bit of a dick.

there was an episode in the first season where there was a baby epidemic of some sort and he tried three different treatments on three different babies. two died, but all the other babies lived. Cameron had to give the bad news though. It turned out that a maid sneezed on a bunch of teddy bears.

I’m pretty sure yeah.

But honestly, I don’t watch it for the patients.
Something about his asshole attitude, big blue eyes, scruffy face gets me.
Plus I’m a Jersey girl

yes he loses patients but he always knows why.

How realistic can a “medical” show be when the doctors routinely break into a patient’s house to find clues?

I look at that show as a detective show disguised as a medical show. House would be the “Columbo”, the “killer” is the disease he’s trying to diagnose, doctor “detectives” search the house for clues, and, at the end, the mystery is solved.

chyna's avatar

@gailcalled You were a bit off tonight. Houses “clairvoyance” came at minute 53.

gailcalled's avatar

@Chyna: I was eliminating the commercials. Sorry not to have been clearer. If I tape and fast forward thru the ads, the show lasts about 45 minutes. I wonder when the show will grind to a halt. Since it is too late for H to show any redeeming qualities, his icy and sardonic behavior is beginning to wear very thin. (Find the clichés here for extra credit.)

chyna's avatar

@gailcalled I honestly liked the show for a couple seasons, but like you, am tired of his same sardonic behavior every single episode. And it is the same show, different people time after time. If they had made it more like ER where it is never predictable, it could’ve worked. Not only does my doctor never break into my house to look for clues, she barely looks at me as she looks at my chart and says “need a prescription for anything”?

gailcalled's avatar

Oh, nice. We share the same doctor also.

shilolo's avatar

@gailcalled and @chyna You two need to find newer and better doctors…

@Shi: Do you make house calls? Not too many choices in my rural area, but I have just switched to a lovely young (44) guy who has privileges at the only hospital I trust. He lets the patient be part of the solution. He’s got young daughters and keeps my tick in alcohol as part of his “show and tell.”

In season one, patients were lost in:
1.04 Maternity
1.10 Histories
1.18 Babies and Bathwater

In season two, patients were lost in:
2.05 Daddy’s Boy
2.08 The Mistake
2.20/21 Euphoria
2.22 Forever

In season three, patients were lost in:
3.03 Informed Consent
3.06 Que Sera Sera
3.20 House Training

In season four, patients were lost in:
4.03 97 Seconds
4.16 Wilson’s Heart

In season five, patients were lost in:
5.02 Not Cancer
5.11 Joy to the World

Sometimes it has been because of an incorrect diagnosis, or one that came too late. Sometimes it has been because the patient’s disease has no cure.

Grisson's avatar

@MacBean agreed.
Seems like the show bats about .500, but of course it’s never House’s fault.
The one thing they seem to agree on: It’s never Lupus.

Great to see Hugh Laurie in Sense and Sensibility! He played Dr. House, I think. Couldn’t figure out what the point of the character was, but I might as well have been watching ‘House’.
