How do I make oatmeal from rolled oats (from the bulk bins)?

Asked by melanie81 (794points) February 15th, 2009

Does anyone happen to know the nutrition facts as well? I read somewhere that 1/2c of oatmeal has 300 calories and 50g carbs! I know this is a healthy meal, but that seems kind of heavy for such a small amount…

that could be accurate, nutritional valuewise. I eat Scottish oatmeal, and it’s “suggest ed serving” is 1/4cup, at 140calories and 23g carbs. x2 = 1/2 cup = about what you said. but i think the fibre makes up for it.??

prep wise, i boil 1 cup water, add 1/2 cup oats (approx, i eyeball it) and reduce heat, stirring constantly. i add some salt as well.

top with fruit, cinnamon, brown sugar, flax seed, ,milk or whatever you want. :)

Oatmeal lowers your cholesterol.

Rolled oats IS oatmeal, and so is Scottish oatmeal (which is more cut than rolled). Either way, throw some hot water on it and flavor it up and you’re good to go unless you want to boil it a bit to make the texture more disgusting. Great stuff. Also,
if you put it in your bathwater, your skin will get soft. Not kidding.

1. Buy oats.
2. Roll oats.
3. Eat Oats.

Oatmeal is so good for you. Eat it and enjoy.
For one serving: 1/2 C. oats. (organic if possible)
1 C. water.

Gently cook for about five minutes. Oats absorb the water. I put a bit of honey and blueberries on it for a yummy and healthy breakfast.

I eat oatmeal quite often, but it wasn’t ‘til I met a Danish guy overseas that I had ever heard of, or even considered, eating the oats raw (as in uncooked). It seemed quite strange, and even a little repulsive, to me at first, but I gave it a go and found it to be ok! Add a little honey, some fresh fruit, a small handful of nuts, a dollup of yogurt and some milk, and you’re good to go! Add a hard-boiled egg to your meal and you’ve got about the perfect breakfast! (and there is anecdotal evidence that uncooked oatmeal absorbs even more cholesterol than cooked oats).

What slays me is the people that insist on using the “quick” oats that cook in a minute because they can’t be bothered to spend the “enormous amount of time and trouble” cooking the non-quick kind. Let’s see – quick oats take 1 minute, and non-quick oats take 5 whole minutes for vastly superior taste and texture.

get the thick rolled oats, not old fashioned

heat 1 cup water , microwave in the bowl for 1 3/4 to 2 minutes, nearly boiling

1/4 tspn salt

I use 2/3 cup of thick rolled oats (use a bit less if you like it runnier)

heaping tblspn brown sugar (less if you like less sweet)

cinnamon to taste

dash of apple pie spice

healthy sprinkle of raisins and dried cranberries

1/4 tspn molasses

let it set for a few minutes 3–5

add 4 walnut halves broken up

I use half n half instead of milk, but whatever peels your banana, add just enough to flavor it well, reheat in micro if necessary

friends call my concoction “wet granola” whatever it’s called it’s great

@laureth haha…I KNOW! To think that all these years I’ve been avoiding the “longer-cooking” oats….from all the fuss, I figured it took an hour to cook! I recently became vegetarian, so I’m trying to incorporate as many healthy alternatives as possible….and I find that much of the pre-packaged stuff has loads of sugar and processed ingredients.

Thanks for all the great answers! This is really helpful.

Same question from a while back. Out of the 111 answers, most are very useful..a few are the usual unhelpful inanities.

If you used steel cut, you can simmer up 5 days’ worth at a time. I use a slow cooker.

The BEST oatmeal for one. Put ½ inch water into a small saucepan and turn heat on high. Add 2 sliced figs, a handful of dried cranberries and any other dried fruit you like. If there is too much fruit, add some more water. When water is at full boil sprinkle ½ cup of thick rolled, or old fashioned rolled oats (NOT QUICK OR INSTANT!) over the surface of the boiling water, evenly. DO NOT STIR. When the water is gone the sound changes and you must immediately turn off the gas heat—or remove the pan from electric heat. Heat one cup of skim milk in the microwave for 60 to 90 seconds, then add the oatmeal. If you must have sugar, use it too, or brown sugar, maybe even some vanilla. Use real cream instead of skim milk if you are wanting to have a decadent meal.
