They probably sell something on line or have wonderful writing and English skills that people are willing to pay for.

They could work from home but still work for a major company.

I know someone who works for a major electronics manufacturing company, and does work for that company that rarely requires him to be at their facility. He only has to go there once maybe every 3 months for meetings. With highspeed internet and conferencing software, it’s extremely feasible and cheaper for the employer to have people work at home.

and it offers a degree of flexibility to the employee.

Either they work for themselves, or they work for a company that doesn’t require them to go to an office.

One of the jobs had a few years ago paid me about 20% more than any other offer I had on the table at the time, because it was a software development job for a company that didn’t have offices for its workers. They saved the money on rent and heat and such, and passed it on to the employees directly.

In today’s poor economy, brothels are raking it in. Everybody knows that tears make the best lubricant.

My company has a work-from home program for certain employees. The company pays for office furnature, an internet connection, laptop, etc, and in exchange gets to not have to rent or buy cubicle farms for employees to use. In the age of the internet, person-to-person contact isn’t necessarily required to do one’s job.

A person that works from home but is employed by a company will receive a paycheck like any other employee (either by mail or direct deposit). They will get that income reported on a W-2

Consultants and people who provide service not as direct employees usually submit a bill to their customer and are paid by check.

If they are providing a contracted service the company contracting their service will report that income on a 1099.

If they are simply running business, receiving money from customers for product or service, then they will be paid via check, cash or credit card. They’ll have to keep track of their own income and expenses and report them on their 1040 (Schedule C, I think).

(Sorry, I answered the tax thing, too, but it wasn’t clear from the question what sort of ‘work from home’ situtation this was).
