North Korean missiles, anyone?

Asked by steelmarket (3603points) February 18th, 2009

Anyone else a little concerned that N. Korea could soon have nuclear-tipped missiles capable of hitting our mainland?

They could, but they won’t. They’re not Al Qaeda- they’ve got home turf to worry about. The only people they would even think about attacking is SK, and they know that if they did, we’d be on their tale big time.
Fortunately, Communists want world revolution, not world annihilation or cleansing. and that’s exactly what they’d get if they pulled something. Unless China backs them up, they won’t try anything.

If North Korea decided to strike us, they most likely wouldn’t have the support of China like they might have had long ago. China likes the lucrative trade and income they’re reaping from the United States and I really don’t think they’re about to jeopardize that.

Additionally, if North Korea did decide to strike us, the amount of damage they could inflict on the United States would pale in comparison to the annihilation we could deliver right back on them and they know this.

@Bluefreedom- I agree completely on the China point. They’re far too intertwined with us economically nowadays to want to risk it all.
If NK had done something much earlier, they may have had the chance to have China’s support. but the main Korean war was far too long ago; they’ve missed their window by about half a century.

Nope not very. They would never, ever use them. Even if they would though, I’m not convinced that they could actually execute a long range missile attack against the US. Just because it is possible, does not mean success is a given.

If China wanted to challenge the US, I’m not sure they’d use NK to do it. NK is too unreliable, and China is already too concerned about regime collapse on their border

They may be planning on testing ICBMS, however the last time they tested a missile, it sort of didn’t work so well, so I’m not holding my breath.

I’m more afraid of Pakistan and India going at it than NK’s saber-rattling, frankly.

@aprilsimnel. You’re not kidding. That is an accident waiting to happen if there ever was one. Scary.

It’s cool; we got folks chillin’ if Afghanistan.

. . . just in case.
