Would you anonymously advertise for Fluther if you could?

Asked by jlm11f (12413points) February 22nd, 2009

I am too lazy to look for the question right now, but there was a question a while ago asking whether people tell others about Fluther and why/why not. Those who don’t tell said it’s because they like the anonymity and it’s their home away from home. But what if someone made a nice Fluther.com poster and all you had to do is print it and put it wherever you work/study/etc. Especially with students, flyers/posters are one of the fastest ways to spread information about something. You would just print the poster out and stick them around campus and no one would know you did it!

If everyone of us spread the word, Fluther would have been double it’s size by now. So the Q is, would you do it or wouldn’t you? If not, why not?

No such poster has been made so far, I am just curious.

I don’t have any bumper stickers on my car. I figure that what I think and do is my business.

At first, I wouldn’t have. Just because I was stupid enough to use my well-known internet handle for my user name. Anyone who knows me would immediately know Augustlan is me. I’m over it now, though. I’m an open book… let them see my dark side and think what they like! I do tell people about it, but no one has signed up (that I’m aware of anyway).

I probably would not, because every large influx of users we’ve had has caused problems.

Hmmm. Interesting idea. I am one who is happy to share the goodness of fluther.

like we dont have a huge influx of crappy questions already :P

Nope only the selected few get to learn of the awesomeness that is fluther.

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

No. Definetly not. If Fluther was twice the size then there would be so many more questions and this site might lose its credibility. So don’t advertise! for Fluther… Please

Ben and Andrew probably hate seeing responses complaining about gaining more users. If they want to make money, they really need more traffic.

But they also want the site to retain it’s awesomeness. So only tell your smart friends about it!

Hmm I find it interesting that most of you equate more people to reduced quality. I was thinking of more people equaling more expertise in diverse areas, therefore better answers. By putting the posters in more educational environments, aren’t you already being selective of who joins?

Because all college students are just so smart and mature right?. ~

How do they get money from a free site?

eambos's avatar

Good, you included a ~

Advertising.

@Eambos – the ”~” was to acknowledge that regardless of the environment, we would still get some idiots. But my argument still stays about how we would be more selective by choosing the right environment.

i do all the time, word of mouth advertising is the best kind!

El_Cadejo's avatar

@PnL but if you advertise it goes out to everyone. EVERYONE. I think we can agree that as a whole humans arent that intelligent, id like to think fluther carved out a little niche of the interwebs smartest :). So thats why i only share with intelligent people, id like fluther to remain this way.

GO OUT AND TELL THE WHOLE WORLD!
If you wanna

jlm11f's avatar

@uberbatman – I think it already goes out to EVERYONE. There isn’t a special password to access the site. We don’t have Me-Fi type requirements. Anyone who uses the internet can stumble on it. How is that any different? Either way, the ones who meet the guidelines and quality, stay on and the rest leave either by force or because they don’t like people ignoring them. The little niche and weeding out process still stays. The only difference is that this way, we reach out to more people and perhaps get to learn about newer things and more topics. How is this not win-win?

I do a lot of word-of-mouth advertising to select people, geographically widespread, who I think would really add a lot to the site. In most cases these are people who might not be able to tell who I am by my user name, or I might not even care.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@PnL no, it doesnt really go out to everyone, if you ask a random person what is yahoo answers or wiki answer they probably can tell you where as if you ask someone what is fluther, they will look at you dumbfounded. Yea you can stumble on fluther or find it online, but its not the same as say a poster hung on a college campus.

jlm11f's avatar

@uberbatman – I am sorry, that answer just sounded like stating the obvious. I know YA is a lot better known than Fluther. Which is why YA does not need posters hung around. Both sites are still accessible to everyone. They are on the same worldwide web. One is just known better due to being around longer, and having the backing of a well known and long standing Internet company. I probably missed your point. So perhaps you can further explain what you were trying to say.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@PnL i suppose my point was that more exposure doesn’t necessarily equate to better.

only if fluther would be happy to annonymously advertise for my business
