What are the odds of a cancer patient surviving ten years without eating or drinking orally and being fed liquids only pumped into the stomach?

Asked by ananth (7points) February 24th, 2009

Does anyone know of a person who has survived cancer and for ten years has been feeding only through his stomach and breathing through his throat. This is serious question – something that has evaded me.

I would suggest editing this question to include better tags. Your only tag is “cancer and survival.” It is unlikely this will be routed to anyone who can help because “cancer and survival” is not a tag that has been used before, and it is not listed in anyone’s areas of expertise.

You should probably repost your question with the tags, “health, medicine, medical, doctor, doctors, cancer, probability, survival, prognosis, expectancy, eating, drinking, stomach, throat.”

I worked in a nursing home many many years ago and we had people who survived for many many years with a feeding tube and tracheotomy.
One man impaticular comes to mind. Even though it was 30 years ago it is as plain as can be to me. It was obvious that he was a very strong, proud man. He was humiliated by his situation but he could not speak. When his wife came in he would look at her with anger.
5 or six years later I went back to work at the nursing home again when my husband lost his job. We needed the money.
That same strong man had been reduced to less than 100 lbs. His fighting spirit was gone. It broke my heart to see him. His family didn’t come near as often to see him. I know he never would have chosen to be kept alive artifically like that, but it is possible to last several years with a feeding tube especially if the cancer is in remission and your dealing with the devistating effects of the cancer and the treatment.
