What new icon to use for Save File?

Asked by robmandu (21331points) February 25th, 2009

Whilst reading a lengthy DF article about click-through concepts, John Gruber asked an interesting parenthetical question: And how long are they going to stick with the antiquated “floppy disk” icon for the Save button, anyway?

By “they” I’m assuming he means big guys like Adobe, Microsoft, and little guys too, like Textpad, UltraEdit and many more.

So, for you wildcatting UI designers out there, what icon would you use in lieu of the floppy disk icon?

An SSD or some other kind of flash memory?

A harddrive image?

My guess is HDD. Apple uses it everywhere, it’s only a matter of time until they use it for Save As and we all imitate them.

Excellent question though. I’m going to look for a place to try out something new and see if the client flips.

I would use an HDD, but they’re soo last year. Flash memory is the future!

A solid state drive, then.

The Tango icon set uses this image, the GNOME icon theme this one, and I think that’s a good enough metaphor.
