How do I recover my password?

I used to be a Windows user but switched completely to Mac 4 years ago. I have given all the Windows desktops away except for one laptop.Now that I can use my mac’s for anything even Windows related I want to give this laptop to my housekeepers son who could really use it. Problem is I can’t remember the password! I didn’t think I had enabled the password required feture. So my son and I went through the few password that we could remember until we finally got the computer (laptop) to log in. Then I proceeded to remove the password and any others I may find which I thought I did correctly. I erased the few files we had on the computer to make it ready to give away. I shut down the computer and just to make sure I turned it back on and to my surprise I was asked for a password again! Problem is now the password doesn’t work and it won’t accept it. I am beside myself and about ready to throw this thing through the window. I have wasted so many hours on this. And I know how much this laptop is needed. But I don’t know what else to do. Its a handsome laptop that is top of the line and will be more than anything he could ever wish for. Please can anyone help me?
