Will you join my revolution?

Asked by simone54 (7629points) February 25th, 2009

The other day at Wendy’s I ordered some chic nugs, paid for them and was ready to get my change back. When the cashier handed me my coins, I dropped one. I looked down and noticed it was a penny. I didn’t even bother to pick it up.

YOU don’t care about pennies either. Nobody does. How many times have you told the cashier to keep the penny or have been told not worry when you need one more cent. I would like to eliminate all that bullshit. It just wastes my time. You can’t even buy anything for one penny. So wouldn’t it just be easier to round it up to the nearest 5 cents?

They’re actually going to start making pennies with different metals because they cost more then one cent to be minted. I say just get rid of them now. I personally think that the country would be a lot better with out these ugly, makes your hands smell, irreverent form of currency.

@simone54— I’m with you and read you 100%!
Boycott Wendy’s!

eponymoushipster's avatar

let’s get rid of money in general, and trade goats and pieces of shells.

simone54's avatar

I’d take a piece of shell to a penny any day of the week.

eponymoushipster's avatar

there you go – problem solved.

now you can get a shake at wendy’s for 2 wampum and a virgin bride.

Vinifera7's avatar

I have no problem with pennies, but rounding would make things easier.

U know, there are some people out there who rely on pennies for survival…what about them?

simone54's avatar

What are you talking about???

tb1570's avatar

@eponymoushipster I better get more than a shake for my virgin bride!!! At least a whole damn happy meal!!

Judi's avatar

take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.

BoyWonder's avatar

We’re living in difficult times and you wanna throw pennies away. Nice.

tb1570's avatar

Uh, no, OP actually suggested doing away w/ pennies all together, which would, in fact, save the treasury & the economy money.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

Well this is certainly going to disappoint penny pinchers. Luckily I don’t pinch many.

Triiiple's avatar

Send me all your pennies please, at least $10 worth =P

eponymoushipster's avatar

@tb1570 have you had their shake – it is a meal!

The problem is that we still need to be able to buy/sell in increments of one cent. Just as an example, take the postage stamp, do you want that to increase in five cent increments everytime they need to raise the cost of postage? On a bigger scale, the banking industry needs to be able to calculate things in one cent increments. Heck, they even work in fractions of a cent, there is a reason banks use figures like 4.5% or 7.25%, because they know that over time even a .25% or .5% of a cent makes a difference. I understand your frustation, but the reality is, we still need to be able to do business that isn’t based on five cent increments. BTW I just deposited $42 in pennies this week from our change container :0)

Well, you know that you can count me out… in.

I’m all for not eating “chic nugs”... >.<

frigate1985's avatar

loser's avatar

Now I want Wendy’s! I’d better save up my pennies…

fireside's avatar

Down with chic nugs!

simone54's avatar

Hey idiots. No body needs those pennies. It we round up to the nearest .05 that would help out the economy.

simone54's avatar

marissa. I never said the banks couldn’t use 1 cent increments. I just wanna get rid of the coins. and last time I bought stamps at the post office, I bought a whole bunch of them. Not just one.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@simone54 ok, so everything you pay for, round it up to the nearest .05 and give me the difference. i’ll give you a paypal account to dump it.

kthxbye.

simone54's avatar

Thank you for proving my point.

marissa's avatar

@simone, the point I was trying to make, is that if you are going to eliminate pennies, you would have to eliminate doing business in increments of one cent (including the way sales tax is calculated), because if the total in a transaction is $31.67, you need to be able to have the option to pay or give change for that amount. Also, I can only imagine the accounting difficulting always rounding up or rounding down would cause, your numbers would never really match the cash and it would make it harder to figure out where the mistake was made, if a mistake was made. I could be wrong, if someone has a realistic way to eliminate the penny without it causing problems elsewhere, I’d love to hear it.

Did someone just call me an idiot?

AstroChuck's avatar

@loser- I don’t think you’re an idiot.

Just a loser.

loser's avatar

@AC Thats better! Thank you!

frigate1985's avatar

@loser awww don’t be mean to yourself…uh…loser!

btko's avatar

A better way would be to choose a sales tax at say 10% then you wouldn’t need pennies.
