Widgets & Gadgets vs. Users of Different Age, etc.

Asked by makemo (531points) March 3rd, 2009

This is a rather particular question, about a particular field of software, but…

Are there any statistic research, that you’ve seen, regarding relations between the use of widgets / gadgets, and users of specific kinds; age, occupation and the like?

I’m especially focusing on OS X Dashboard widgets and Windows Vista’s Gadgets, or close variants thereof (Konfabulator, etc).

I did some (sloppy) googling, but couldn’t find much. So I’d be curious if someone had any ideas, where to look, or possesses any insightful thoughts of their own. Wild speculations are also appreciated.

I’d be curious in this because I try to evaluate the potential in targeting particular types of audiences for a (SaaS) product/service that I’m involved with. Well, we target just about ‘anyone’, but each user type has its unique knacks for different things, I hear :)

Are you googling “usability study” or “user interface”? There’s a lot of age related data that’s come out on computer usage. Forrester may have some; things like this used to turn up as presentations on SlideRocket sometimes.
