Is it okay for gauged ear piercings to bleed a tiny bit over a month after they were peirced?

Asked by monsoon (2528points) March 3rd, 2009

My girlfriend got her ears pierced to a ten gauge about a month ago and they keep having small amounts of blood on them when she cleans them. They’re not swollen or discolored or anything.

She also has had her ears gauged to a six for a while, and those bled a lot when she went to the six gauge. These new piecings are above those.

She’s just wondering if that’s something to worry about.

Thanks.

from 10 to 6 is a pretty big jump, and you can expect them to bleed a bit. At least for some people it’s expected, and not uncommon for a little bit of blood. If it was pierced at 10, that is still kinda thick for a piercing. I think most piercings start at 14 or 12 for the ears.

Now, they’re still bleeding a month later. That’s kind of weird. It might have something to do with her trying to go to 6 without it properly healing. I’d keep it at 10 until the bleeding stops, then move to 8, then 6, and so on. I wouldn’t take big jumps like that. And invest into some of this stuff, it works like a charm. I had my ears gauged out to 4 before I joined the air force and had to take them out.

I wanted to get some small gauges myself. What sizes do people usually start?

I think 12 is where people should start, though 10 is acceptable.

She is moving way too fast. If she is in such a hurry to get them bigger she can just get them dermal punched.

Wow, okay, you guys didn’t understand the situation.

She has had her ears gauged to sixes for a while, months and months. She did those normally, starting from a regular piercing and going up one gauge at a time until she reached 6, at which point they bled and she stopped.

Now, above that, she got pierced to a gauge 10, as in, she had only one hole in each ear at six, and now she has one more above each of those at a 10. This is not too high a gauge to be pierced at, I believe they pierce all the way up to a 6. She is not going too fast, that is definitely not the problem. Technically, they 10 gauges are not stretched at all, they were pierced that way.

We’re only wondering if they might be infected and what proper treatment of that would be. She uses emu oil and sea salt soaks right now.

I’d say they’re probably not infected since the skin isn’t irritated, and it doesn’t look swollen or discolored.

Don’t over soak the piercing with sea salt soaks. I’d say 1–2 times a day would be sufficient, not sure how much she is doing that.
