Thats kind of hard, theres no real guarantee that you will never see a snake or mouse or whatever else in your home because I don’t think they are animals attracted to filth anyway? but idk you live in the woods so it is possible, Just be careful and cautious I guess

Cats. I don’t know about snakes, but cats will certainly keep mice out.

We are surrounded by woods too. The only thing that has helped us is our pets.

Well, the snakes will keep the mice out…If you want to keep them all out. Get a good mouser dog like a Jack Russel terrier.

I wish I lived deep in the woods and had snakes and mice in my house.

You can also clear the area immediately around your house. This is a tradition in rural Texas that actually originally came from Africa with the slaves. Snakes and mice both prefer cover, even that of fallen leaves, so if you keep a strip of land around your house clean of all plants and debris you will be less likely to have either critter come close enough to your house to find the ways inside.

You can also limit entrance by carefully going around the outside of your house and blocking any potential entry ways. However, be aware that neither mice nor snakes need very large openings, and you might easily overlook a few. They also are often good climbers so openings way up high need to be tended to as well.

And finally, as others have said, pets can be a big help. Our Shar-Pei was an excellent mouser (one of their jobs back home in China actually). Terriers are also noted for their hunting enthusiasm. Cats, of course, are often fascinated by small critters. However, I have actually had more interlopers caught by the dogs than by the cats. OTOH the cats are very good at letting me know there is a problem. In our house mice sneak in through the drier vent so the cats like to sit in the laundry room staring fixedly at the drier.

Good luck! I wish I lived deep in the woods – I have done the best I can by planting 27 trees on my 1/5 acre lot but it is a long way from being a “woods” (although the neighbors call our house “The Forest.”)

We have a Jack Russell Terrier, one of the best rodent killing animals alive. Makes a cat look downright lazy. I saw ours snap up a ground squirrel as it was running by. CHOMP! it was dead in a split second. Snakes will only go indoors in search of warmth and food. Keep the rodents out, the snakes should stay out as well.

A trucker I know said his Father in Law’s two Jack Russell Terriers killed four hundred rats in an afternoon when his FIL had a grain silo torn down. I can believe it, they are tireless little hunters.

They’re probably coming in for the warmth and dryness in winter, A mouser, cat or dog. is your best choice. It doesn’t hurt to shut all vents with heavy mesh screening and seal all cracks up to 3 feet. Checking for entrance points should be part of your annual maimtenance.

Mice are easier to get rid of, any good exterminator, but snakes ugh.

@galileogirl snakes are misunderstood creatures, but they serve a valuable purpose. They eat rodents which can spread disease. Sankes are pretty much harmless, and even the venomous ones are not overly aggressive (in the US) if you leave them alone. Snakes and spiders are often seen as creepy or icky, but without them, we would have a lot more problems with the disease-carrying bugs and rodents that they eat.

They have no purpose in your house, unless you are keeping them in an unnatural environment for your personal pleasure. And the “ick” has to do with finding one in my shoe in a dark closet. In case you have lost track, this thread is about keeping them out where they can do what they’re meant to do.
