Is there a scientific name for this feeling?

Asked by patg7590 (4608points) March 10th, 2009

You’re driving through a city, no matter which ways you turn, you seem to always end up and the same few places. All of a sudden you get this feeling that the world you’re in is very very small, and it may not be, but you seem trapped in a small niche. Its like clostrophobia, but in regards to location. The only example I can give is the Truman show. haha

Well if you feel like your being watched, it’s probably paranoia…....or you might be at Disneyland…?

patg7590's avatar

not the being watched part of the Truman Show, the part where the world is really only ten square miles or whatever

@patg7590: Excessive vulnerability syndrome.

I have a reoccurring dream like that. I am always in the same “city” and I am always trying to find my way home. The “city” always has the same streets and shops in every dream
I suppose there is some analytical reason stemming from my perfect childhood that explains all this… Ha!

patg7590's avatar

Exactly! except I feel like this when I’m awake.
Like if I go too fast in any one direction the set will just end. lol

@Basp; I would surmise that the recurring dream symbolizes just that…wanting to go home and replicate your childhood again. If it was less than perfect, you may want to redo it and improve things. If it was, indeed, perfect, than that also makes sense. Freud called that The Repetition Compulsion redo things or remake personal connections in order to get them right the second time around.

@Pagt: “Its like clostrophobia,” but may be claustrophobia instead. Try using the “trapped in a small niche” as the symbol for what you may be feeling. Do you feel trapped in a job, relationship, stuck in making a decision? Often the dream images are less important than the metaphors and emotions.

Gail is so wise! That’s why she’s our favorite.

Your words make sense to me. I did, indeed, have a blessed childhood. There were nine of us and we had some lean times, but we never went without the things that really mattered. My mom and dad had the Cleavers beat by miles (sans the pearls during housework).
