Poll (sort of) what movie should I catch tomorrow?

Asked by Jack79 (11027points) March 13th, 2009

The local choices are:
1. The Reader
2. Valkyrie
3. 7 pounds
4. He’s just not that into you
5. Confessions of a Shopaholic
6. Doubt
7. Changeling

(there are others that I have either seen or plan to see some other time, but these are the main choices for tomorrow)

I like all sorts of movies, and will probably end up seeing all of the above sooner or later. Out of the ones you have seen, did you find any unexpectedly great? Were you disappointed by one or two? Do you think they deserved the criticism they got (and in the first case, the Oscar)?

Damn! Why isn’t Mary Poppins on that list????

All the critics are saying that Valkrie is a really bad movie, 7 pounds isn’t really bad but I don’t think it’s the best. I would also go with Doubt or Changeling.

I’d go with Doubt or Changeling. From what I’ve seen of it, I can tell Doubt is probably a really, really great movie. Well done and well acted. But the plot is very ho-hum to me. Just not my kind of movie. Since you’re into it, I vote for it.

Changeling because it’s a really fascinating story and probably very compelling.

I haven’t seen any of them, but I would have seen Doubt were it something I was interested in and I want to see Changeling.

Um, re: Confessions of a Shopaholic. The book is really fun, but I had to put it down several times out of embarrassment for the main character.

Well, I saw “Confessions of a Shopaholic” last weekend with my husband. Mind you, we haven’t been “out” to a movie in a while, but we both liked it. It’s a “cute” movie. So don’t go if you’re looking to build Testosterone…it’s an Estrogen builder ;D

These are all very different types of films! It really depends what you’re in the mood for, and the type of genre you favor.

The Reader would be my recommendation, here’s why:

1. The Reader – Kate Winslet. Can’t go wrong. It is very sensual, and co-produced by the late great Anthony Minghella. Won lead supporting actress Oscar. ‘Nuff said.
2. Valkyrie – Tom Cruise. Could go wrong. Sorry, but it’s true- at this point in his career, his celibrity-dom overshadows his talent. The film was OK, but very slow.
3. 7 Pounds – One of Will Smith’s best performances ever. You will either love it or hate it. I thought it was one of the most thought-provoking powerful films out last year. If you’re a thinker you will enjoy it.
4. He’s Just Not That Into You – surprisingly, very good. Sometimes films like these with a large ensemble of big stars tank. It doesn’t. It has also garnered the chick flick label in many circles. It’s not. This is a funny movie, and vivid at times. If you like Scarlett Johansson go see it.
5. Confessions of a Shopaholic – this is a chick flick.
6. Doubt- you will walk away still trying to figure it out. If you like movies that have you wondering and discussing it several days later, this is it. It was featured as a question on fluther. Meryl Streep was incredible, as was Viola Davis.
7. Changeling- Angelina Jolie gives a harrowing performance, and this riveting movie will have you screaming inside if you’re a parent or have ever loved a child as your own. Based on a true story, it is directed by Clint Eastwood.

I don’t know much about any of those, but I have heard great things about Valkyrie.

Thank you all, and especially mcbealer for a detailed and well-balanced answer. It will probably be “The Reader” tomorrow, though the trailer that impressed me most was the “7 pounds” one, I really look forward to that one too.

If I had that list of movies to choose from, I’d probably hit a bookstore instead.

Definetly number 8, The Watchmen

See The Reader; it will generate lots of interesting discussions if you are with interesting people who like to talk about movies. The time line moves back and forth so you have to pay attention. And all the details matter. It’s head and shoulders above the rest of the list. Kate W is the new Meryl Streep.

MY family calls movies similar to Shopaholic “Brains-under-the-Seat” movies and know ahead of time that that is what we are spending our money on.

Some reviewer said that Changeling starred Anjelina Joiie’s lips.

Just got back. Got there late, so ended up watching “7 Pounds” instead. A very powerful film. Loved it, even though some parts were a bit too distressing, having lived similar experiences.
