What is your heritage?

Asked by DrasticDreamer (23996points) March 15th, 2009

I myself am quite the mutt: Irish, Native American, German, Danish and French. I think it’s funny, but no one can ever tell what I am. People always ask if I’m some kind of Spanish or Native American mostly (especially during Summer), but I’ve also been asked if I was Russian numerous times.

One time a boss of mine stared at me for a while and asked flat out, “What are you?!” – not meant to be mean, but she just couldn’t tell.

Anyone have anything like that happen?

Not me. People know I’m Italian American; Neapolitan both sides.

On my fathers side: German, Polish, Irish, Scottish, French, English.
On my mothers side: Native American, Portuguese, Scottish, Irish, African American.
Nobody actually asks what I am… I have dark eyes and hair but my skin is Casper-like, so everyone just usually assumes I’m white.

Our family includes 3 races, 5 major religions, and 13 ethnic groups. Some of us look like one thing and some like another. Most folks seem to think I look German or Scottish, and bits of me actually are, but I don’t know which bits. When I live up north in snow country my skin is so white I look blue, but when I live in the sun I am polka dot. I am the only one in my immediate family to have dead straight hair. Others have hair that ranges from wavy to curly to nappy, except for my maternal grandfather, who had none.

We generally consider ourselves either human or American.

As far as my heritage, I agree wholeheartedly with Barack Obama when he said that it “would have to arise from something more fine than the bloodlines we’d inherited. It would have to find root in…all the messy, contradictory details of our experience” (Dreams from My Father p 204).

I’m three quarters Italian, one quarter Nova Scotian.

I look like a mobster though, so people assume I’m all Italian. I joke that the quarter Canadian is what keeps me from killing people.

Raggedy_Ann's avatar

German with just a hint of Dutch.

Both my parents were from the foothills of the Arkansas Ozarks, as were their kin from as far back as anyone has bothered to look. So I guess my heritage is pure Hillbilly. For the health of the bloodline, I took a bride of less specific pedigree (we’re not even cousins, as far as we know). It’s taken awhile to get used to her strange speech and peculiar customs, but it was better this way for the sake of the young’uns.

Native American, Irish and Italian (rumor has it there may be some French, but due to a few adoptions we don’t know this for sure). My little sister got all the Irish genes whereas I (particularly in the warmer months) get so dark that coupled with my dark hair and dark eyes there is no sign of the Irish in me at all only the other 2!

On my father’s side, the paternal family tree dates back to 1500-something in Wales; then emigrates to the “New England” in the 1600s; so I am a pre-revolutionary American WASP mutt (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant).
On my mother’s side, I am German and Swiss – first generation American (she is a resident alien).

On my mother’s side, I’m Pennsylvania Dutch (not sure about that..it’s what I’ve been told) German, English, Irish, Scottish, Native American-Comanche
On my father’s side, a lot of English, Scottish, Native American-Cherokee, possibly Irish..I’m not sure.
I have a lot of interesting ancestors on my mother’s side, signers of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, we were always told one of our relatives invented the steamboat…Wikipedia says he just financed it lol.

hearkat's avatar

@casheroo: I have an ancestral Uncle that signed the Constitution, too!

breedmitch's avatar

Hmm lets see…. I’m Russian, (Ruthenian) Ukrainian, Polish, German, Danish, Irish, Italian. I am from Russia, but I for some reason inherited German/Polish facial features, people think I am German until i speak, amusing is it not?
