When eyelashes fall out, do some never grow back?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3163points) March 16th, 2009

Well, eyelashes have always been irritating when they fall into my eyes. I’ve always wondered if they continued to grow though, since my mother oddly has no eyelashes under her eyes. I guess my question has already been proven by my mom, but why didn’t hers grow back? Anyone have a clue?

Um, I think on most people they do grow back, otherwise as people get older they would not have any eyelashes by a certain age, and there are plenty of older people who have eyelashes.

I think eyelashes work just like the rest of the hair on the human body. It falls out, it grows back, it gets thinner as you get older, and a few people go bald.

I wonder if there’s a certain number of times they’ll grow back or something. I’ve heard stories from some people with trichotillomania who have compulsively pulled eyelashes until they’ve stopped coming back in.

I have trichotillomania, and pulled my eyelashes for over ten years. They do grow back, but definitely not all of them. My eyelashes are now not as thick. And possibly, with genetics, as you get older yours don’t grow back as much. Every person is different.

I’m an eyelash-puller, too. There are two patches in particular that I tend to yank out, and even when they’ve grown all the way back, they’re still shorter than the ones that have been pulled less. But so far they have always come back. I still worry, though, because I can’t get myself to stop it, and maybe one day they won’t.

@MacBean and @chaseroo: I’m right there with you. It’s been a few months, and I’m doing good, but I find myself touching them all the time, curling and such. It’s annoying now because they are different lengths on the left and right eye.
