Why isn't the first day of spring on the vernal equinox?

Today is the vernal equinox, here in The Cornfield the sun rises at 7:32 a.m. and sets at 7:32 p.m. I always thought of this as the beginning of spring. Turns out spring doesn’t start until Friday. Any ideas why that might be?
