For the love of food, are you a food addict?

Asked by ronski (742points) March 18th, 2009

I think about food all the time…I love it and if I could, I would eat a ton more than I do, instead I really have to watch how much I eat, otherwise I could easily eat 3,000 calories a day. How come some people don’t really care much about food, but other people can’t stop fantasizing about it!? It’s not fair…

Only in the sense that I would die without it.

We were all born with our plussessesz and minussezess.

I’m fairly addicted to snack foods but even they get boring after a while.

I am absulutely a foodie. And I’m sure there have been days I have eaten three thousand calories. Generally though, I eat pretty healthy.

Very few sweets (as I am diabetic), lots of fish and veggies. I do eat too many carbs though (mmm, fresh bread and mashed potatoes).

But here’s how I see it:
I don’t drink
I don’t smoke
I don’t play video games
I don’t do drugs
I don’t watch sports
I rarely swear
I’m in bed early and up early
I’m very active and motivated
And I spend all my free time with my wife and daughter

If food is my one vice, then so be it.

When I travel, I much rather to find out what and where are the locals eat than sightsee. Even though I am good (enough) with portion control. I am waiting for the day people can just beam out the food they just ate and start over.

@cprevite What’s wrong with sports? xD

@NMW: Nothing at all. I just don’t care for them so they take up no time in my life.

In another post I mentioned my “calories in (through the pie hole) vs calories out (work, exercise, keeping your body temperature stable) theory. I figure the body is an engine that needs fuel to put out work. Typically I eat about 2200–2500 calories per day. My weight fluctuates a little but generally hovers at 67kg. But 3 or 4 times a year I spend some long weekends at a radio station on a mountain top with some friends doing extremely physical work from sunup to sundown: tower repair, antenna installation, pulling cables. We bring all our food in so it is easy to keep track of what we eat. I calculated we all eat about 4500 calories per day during the event! We feel starved and none of us gain weight. It takes one day for me to get back to the 2200calories per day routine.
By now you know I lived in Japan and it is interesting to see how the cultures are different. Here after a good meal we say, “Man! I’m stuffed.” There, they have an expression: “Hara hachi bun.” Meaning “Man! I’m at 8/10 full” That’s what they think is the ideal “fullness”. Plus they get plenty of exercise walking, taking the stairs, etc. It works. You don’t see many overweight people in Japan and their life expectancy is greater .
I figure if you want to eat a lot you have to exercise a lot. The exercise/work should come first. A scale will tell you if you are moving in the right direction.

(I do realize that some people are addicted. and some people truly have thyroid problems but for the vast majority of us, it’s “calories in vs calories out”)

I’m addicted to cake.

dynamicduo's avatar

Nope. I have a very healthy relationship with food. It does take restraint and good choices and effort to accomplish.

I don’t count my calories unless I need to know that information. I eat plenty of veggies and fruit, and a variety of foods around that.

I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. I’m not a fan of cake or cupcakes unless they’re made by my partner’s mother who makes the most delicious things. I like ice cream and cheesecake, and very rarely have only a big portion of either as a meal. (I always want to flaunt it to kids that I can have ice cream as supper!)

As to why some people can and some people can’t, I attribute a lot of it to willpower. I simply will not have an unhealthy relationship with food, so it doesn’t happen. I take the effort to exercise and go on walks to allow myself to be a bit more lenient with what I eat, and also to not gorge and stuff my face or get seconds.

@Mr_M ; Pan Cake?

Bakery cake. If you ever hear of a serial robber of bakeries (products only; not money), it probably will be ME.

I definitely think of food more than anything else during a normal day. I love it more than most normal people. I should weigh a lot more than I do.

I’m a total Foodie. I enjoy it, I indulge in it. I’m an addict. Food is where basically all my discretionary money goes.

I am an admitted foodie. I love fresh home-grown veggies, and I am also a food purist. I refuse to eat fast food, and would rather spend two days preparing a specialty dish in my kitchen than to order in (or out, whatever is the proper term). I will occasionally order a pizza, but only when I am feeling lazy. Warm months are my favorite, as I can fire up the grill and cook all my favorites. I don’t count calories, but I do count Scoville units. The best thing in the world is the endorphin rush brought on my eating hot peppers. My search for the best tasting hot sauce in the world continues.

I recently found dark chocolate made with chili peppers. Almost as tasty as the habanero jelly beans I love so much. I like my sweets to have a little bit of a bite to them.

I wouldn’t say I’m addicted, but I’m also a foodie. I love food. I love going out and having nice big meals, or eating a lot at home. Lucky for me, my husband is a chef so he can whip up some tasty, quick meals. Or fancy food from the restaurants he’s worked at.

ubersiren's avatar

@casheroo : You lucky ho. My husband does cook quite often. I can’t complain. But his expertise doesn’t go much beyond homemade macaroni and cheese.

Im addicted to junk food. I could eat krispy kreme, cakes, pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, fajitas, etc all day if I could. Thats why i limit myself to eat it only one day a week.

cak's avatar

I’m not an addict I think, but I do love food. I want good food, I don’t want junk…except for the occasional buffalo wing night!

We have a garden, we grow a lot of our own vegetables. What we don’t grow on our own, we get at the farmer’s market. I am a veggieholic, though. To me, there is nothing better than picking a tomato, rinsing it with the garden hose and eating it like an apple. Yum.

What’s an addict? Seems to me an addict is someone who does something so much that it hurts them, either personally, physically, or socially.

If your love of food has those consequences, you’re addicted. Otherwise, not.

As an example, it seems to me that, counter-intuitive as it may sound, people who suffer with anorexia or bulimia are food addicts. Their relationship to food causes them to do things that hurt them, physically, personally, and socially.

Similarly, someone who was morbidly obese, and couldn’t move on their own, or never leave the house because of their obesity would be considered an addict. Even people who are overweight enough to be shunned by others could be considered food addicts, although where to draw the line between addict and non-addict would be a tricky issue.

i love food and cannot understand why some people eat the same thing all the time. i have to try anything different and i get excited when talking to somebody from other ethnic groups about what they eat. i just want to go home and cook it! watching the food channel as we speak.

There is something about the bittersweet prick of the needle as it enters the crook of my arm. The slow depression of the plunger and subsequent release ,into my bloodstream, of the dragon I have chased my entire…uh, hang on…this is about food? Never mind.

these are not the droids you seek

ronski's avatar

@daloon I think you can be addicted to something and not have it be life threatening or horrible to you: video games for instance. You can also be addicted to food whether you eat a ton of it or not, because it is always lurking in the back of your mind.

My mom will buy a cake from just desserts, and than eat it within 2 hours…that’s an addiction. She’s not fat, but i don’t think it’s good for her.

wundayatta's avatar

@ronski: it seems to me that a video game addiction harms you socially. Also, if you are always thinking about food, they your attentions is probably not on people around you, which also harms you, and may cause you to lose important relationships.

I don’t know about your mom, but I’m pretty sure people don’t get addicted to anything, unless they are medicating for another source of pain.

I’m a foodie for sure. I’ve got Slovene/Austrian roots on one side, Irish roots on the other, and I lived in Chicago (area) New Orleans and Texas, among other places. @ckinyc, I prefer to sample the local cuisine and the sights and the music…and the beer…

EmpressPixie's avatar

@Yetanotheruser: Get out! I’m in Chicago, I’ve lived in New Orleans. Crazy. :)

JellyB's avatar

I think so. I love eating, and i love free food, and i’ll probably always be found near the snacks table at a party or something. Heh heh….. :)

crissyxox12's avatar

you should be able to eat junk food, but its a matter of how much. as long as you arent home all day, and do activities..you should be able to love your junk.
-eat lots of veggies and fruits
-buy mostly healthy stuff so your not surrounded
-get at least an hour of excersize everyday (walk up and down stairs,go to gym)
-make sure when you eat, your not actually full! (:
i hope that helped!(:
