Should I quit my well paying job to go back to school?

Asked by kyraugh (201points) March 19th, 2009

I want to go back to school for makeup artistry, but the program is crazy expensive and there are no guarentees of work after…and right now I have a good job, but I dislike it…

Do you have a family to support? Will you get student loans to help you pay for rent, food..etc? Why do you need to quit your job to go to school?
If it’s your passion and you really want to do it, I say go for it. But, there are a lot of factors to consider.

In this economy, that’s a big risk. One that’s too big for me to personally take.

I’d suggest you save your money for the next year or two, then when things start looking better economic-wise, quit your job and enroll in that school. Saving money will allow you to be wise about financing your education as well as giving you flexibility in terms of what level of lifestyle you’re stuck with while in school (is it ramen and mac and cheese for dinner every day, or will you have enough money to actually eat decent food?).

Have you saved up for school? Have you asked about their placement programs for graduates? Have you researched the employment prospects for the industry?

Ask someone for an informational interview who has jobs in your field.

Do the background research so you can make an informed decision.

Yes, quit your job and give it to me. People out there are dying for jobs right now.

Money is not the only thing. And there are never any guarantees of work, ever.

Can you go back to school part-time?

A bird in hand….

Following one’s dreams and passions is important, however this is an economic crunch!

Did you see this story? OR this one?

This is no time to leave a “well paying job” to study for an uncertain future. Now, if your family is willing to support you, or you have saved up enough to pay for school and a possible year of being unemployed afterwards, GO FOR IT!!!

If not, stay put. If the economy gets worse, who’s to say there’ll be a need for make up artistry?

If it picks up quicker than the economists are currently projecting, then you can reconsider this option again.
