A new version of the musical "West Side Story" is coming out where some of the songs will be sung in Spanish and some songs in English. What do you think of that?

The point is to make it more realistic to the time the story takes place. Songs sung by the Puerto Rican characters would be sung in Spanish. English characters would sing in English.

A wonderful chance for all those well educated, bi-lingual Americans.

you don’t have to be well-educated to be bilingual. i would know, trust me.

i played Roselia in high school, i cant imagine singing ‘America’ in Spanish?

Mr_M's avatar

I figure, for people who never saw the play, unless they ARE bi-lingual, what good is it? And even if they are, the words will not be exactly the same in order to keep the rhythm of the song.

Well I think it’s awesome. Have none of you guys ever been to the opera? Not everything has to be in your language for it to be a good play.

@La_chica_gomela im not hatin’, i think its a great interpretation. but i believe the famous fluther answer fits in here very well, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

&since when did musical theater have to be ‘realistic’?

I love the original version, I don’t want to see it made into a cheesy-21st-century remake. shudder

Shouldn’t it be in English and Puerto Rican?

A_Beaverhausen's avatar

@Blondesjon they speak Spanish, but English is a second language there.

Blondesjon's avatar

@A_Beaverhausen…Very true but it is their own version. I’ve heard a lot of English that I need a translator for.
