Can I just shut off main switch from electric panel for my hot water tank?

Asked by love_boy (1points) March 20th, 2009

I am not going to be home for 6–8 months and wondering if i can just shut power source to my hot water tank without shutting off the water source. Someone told me that by doing this it will rot my tank from inside and may start to leaking over time. What is the best way to do this?

I can’t see how it would cause the tank to rot, but if you don’t cut off the supply and a leak does occur, the water will just keep on coming. If the supply is cut, the tank would still empty in the event of a leak, but at least it would stop once it’s empty.

The safest solution might be to both cut the supply and open the hot water tap to depressurize the tank.
