Not Suitable For Work. It’s for if people are browsing certain webpages at work that may contain content deemed inappropriate for their work environment (photos, crude language, etc).

Always remember one thing, though. NSFW never applies to Fluther. At work, at home, or at play, Fluther is your friend and you should always try to make it a productive and entertaining part of your day. =)

Not Safe For Work.

“Not safe for work” is what I’ve had it mean to me. “Not suitable” works as well though.

To clarify, NSFW means “this item should not be viewed at work”. The logic behind this is that the link contents are pornographic (or have breasts or penises), violent, or could otherwise get you in trouble if your company was monitoring what you were browsing. Whenever you give such a link, unless the thread is explicitly for giving such links, a NSFW warning is appropriate to give.

Sometimes “NSFW” (not safe for work) is also used to warn you when something is going to make you laugh way too loudly in the office and attract a lot of unwanted attention.

Even if the company doesn’t monitor you through software, you don’t want to be viewing NSFW content when a boss or colleague walks up behind you. It’s also a good idea to avoid anything marked “NSFW” if your children are watching.

@Bluefreedom, that’s so, unless, of course, the Fluther question happens to have been marked ‘NSFW’...

yeah, I wish the comedy album I was listening to was marked with that… I laughed so loud and uncontrollable that people thought I was having some sort of seizure.

Sometimes I send funny things to my co-worker far away in another quadrant of my floor. I can always tell within seconds when she has opened her e-mail. I’m sure I ought to put a ‘NSFW’ label on them, but hearing her burst of laughter across that distance is always so gratifying.
