Anyone have any expeience with children's gum surgery?

Asked by artyness (7points) March 21st, 2009

My daughter lost one of her top front teeth 6 months ago and the adult tooth hasn’t come in yet. X-rays were done-she has adult teeth ready to come in. The dentist suggested gum surgery to make an opening for the tooth to come thru. Anyone have any expeience with this?Gum surgery to let adult teeth thru.

I am no expert on kids dentistry and have not heard of this. All my 4 kids did eventually get their upper teeth in. Personally I would get a second opinion before subjecting my daughter to surgery.

My daughter has always been quite a bit behind her classmates when it comes to teeth, puberty and the rest. She is 10 1/2 years old. So, she is really quite old to not have her front teeth in yet. But, I think I will wait 3 months-like the orthodontist agreed to (he said her gums can become toughened and the teeth’s roots can become curved or bent if the teeth do not erupt soon) , to see if her teeth come in on their own. I definately do not want to go ahead with surgery if it’s just a waiting game for the teeth to show. I have also heard that children’s dental surgeons can be too agressive in their treatments. Thanks for the input Dog.

I had 6 baby teeth pulled, at age 12 (possibly 13) because my dentist said my adult teeth were just about to come in…they did not come in right away, like they said. I had to wear spacers, and keep my teeth from moving. But, we waited it out for them to come in. It sucked, but teeth come in naturally…I wouldn’t do a surgery on my child for something that occurs naturally.
I forget what the metal things were that I wore, they went around my teeth and made it so they didn’t shift.

Thanks all. Waiting the 3 months and maybe longer is definately what I will be doing.
