I love Cat Power’s cover of How Do I tell You (I love you) by Cat Stevens.

It’s in a DeBeers commercial and tragically only there. So you only get like 30 seconds. But it’s so amazing. I hate that it isn’t available elsewhere.

At the moment, I’m rather partial to Magnet & Gemma Hayes’ cover of Bob Dylan’s Lay Lady Lay.

The Beatles cover of Twist and Shout.

Jeff Buckley’s rendition of “Hallelujah”

Cat Power’s cover of (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. It’s so different from the original, but I think she really uncovers Jagger’s true message in his seemingly upbeat song.

listen.

Against Me’s cover of Old Crow Medicine Show’s cover of Bob Dylan’s “Wagon Wheel.”

Also, Dawn Landes’ version of Young Folks (orignally Peter Bjorn & John) is really fun.

And I think that Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s cover of R. Kelly’s Ignition is hilarious.

This is a great question! I could probably come up with 50 more awesome covers. But there’s just as many shitty cover songs out there, too.

I heard Band of Horses do a cover of Hall and Oates’ Kiss on My List in concert a couple of years ago. It was so sweet.

I have too many cover favourites. At the mo’, it’s either Elliott Smith’s cover of The Beatles’ Because, or his cover of Figure 8 from Schoolhouse Rock.

Atomic Kitten’s cover of “The Tide is High”.

Ahh and the whole I Am Sam Soundtrack with all those Beatles covers! Most of them are pretty wonderful if I recall.

exitnirvana's avatar

@aviona, that Ignition cover IS hilarious.

…any cover found on Nirvana Unplugged is worth listening to, as well.

Any cover by Cake. Cake is amazing.

lefteh's avatar

@dverhey: Should have changed that fucking lock..

Cake’s cover of Bread’s “Guitar Man”!
Get it? Cake. Bread. Kind of funny.

DeanV's avatar

I’m partial to “Strangers In The Night” myself.

Like a deadpan Sinatra.

Hendrix, all along the watchtower. Dylan covers usually turn out great as the source material is, well great.

exitnirvana's avatar

Oh man, I completely forgot about Cake’s take on Guitar Man. Amazing.

casheroo's avatar

Johnny Cash’s cover of NIN Hurt. I love it.

Cake covered Guitar Man?! Wow, I have got to get my hands on that! Another good cover is Boys of Summer by The Ataris.

conor oberst’s cover of the biggest lie by elliott smith.

there are tons of cover songs i really like, but when i listen to conor’s cover, i can almost feel the same vibe that elliott gave in the original. obviously it’s not the same, but i really love conor’s cover for being able to come so close and emit such a strong sense of emotion through a song he didn’t even write himself.

I second Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujiah.”
Also, the Black Crowes doing “Hard to Handle.”

Cat Power (who seems to do great covers) – Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again. (I’m Not There soundtrack)

lurve to Cat Power and Bob Dylan

Serious lurve to all the Cat Power responses—I agree that she does awesome covers. I also like her Wonderwall cover.

Israel Kamakawiwo’ole did a cover/medley of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World that I absolutely love – the Hawaiian style of the music is perfect for both of those songs.

Also, Me First and Gimme Gimmes did a great punk cover of The Rainbow Connection – I’m usually not a huge punk fan, but that one is just priceless…
