Are there different British accents?
In the U.S. people from the northeast, south, and west have different accents. Is it the same in GB?

As a midwesterner I feel less than well represented.
Absolutely! Accents can vary even within London. There is Cockney English, the Geordie accent, BBC English, a Mid-Atlantic accent, Welsh, Scottish and Irish accents, Upper class English, and so on. Britian’s landscape of dialects and accents is both geographical and social, and so rather more complex than the geographical variation in the U.S.

One time, when I was in London, I needed directions. A helpful man from Manchester stopped to assist me. However, then an equally helpful but more understandable Scot had to translate for me. I couldn’t understand a word the gent from Manchester uttered, but I could get the gist from the Scot.
When I was in Caracas, I saw the film Mad Dogs and Englishmen, a documentary about Joe Cocker (who also hails from Manchester). I had to read the Spanish subtitles to understand what he said.
Many, many accents… considering the limited geographic area, it’s much richer in different dialects than America is.
Oh there most definitely are. Since I started dating a Brit i’ve become much more aware of all of them and i’m getting really good at identifying where they’re from even though i’m an American! The Brit I was dating once told me that if I were British, she would sound like their version of a redneck hick to me. Interesting.

Yes, there are very strong accents . northern and southern accents are very different. You should look on youtube for videos of accents from newcastle, liverpool etc. They’re very different from the Cambridge accent.

They’re all over the place. I’ve heard Geordie, Yorkshire, Liverpudlian, Manc, East Anglian, Kentish, whatever you call what people speak from Sunderland; there’s got to be at least 40 different ones I’ve heard in my life….
