What would be a good type of paint to use on plastic to give it a glossy look?

Asked by Elumas (3170points) March 24th, 2009

I think I may repaint my xbox 360. What type of paint should I use?

If you spray it first with a plastic primer, you should be able to use just about any enamel paint.

I am not certain .. I wish I could contribute and help!... but I would love to see a picture of how it looks when you are finished painting the case. :)

FUSHION Plastic “glossy” paint by Krylon….I LOVE this stuff! You can get it at your local hardware store. Our Ace handles the full line by Krylon. Have fun!

It works great on old plastic toddler toys that fade iwith time/sunlight, too (for anyone else reading this thread)

Forgot to add…NO sanding or priming needed AT ALL!

@SpatzieLover About how much does that cost?

I came to give the same answer as Spatzie. It’s spray paint, and not terribly expensive. I can’t remember how much, but I want to say it was under $5.00. Don’t quote me on it, though.

Edit: I just saw a price of $6.99/can on a website.

I honestly would personally oil paint it. As long as you’re careful, it’d turn out amaaazing. This is only if you’re after doing a painting on it.

Also, in other situations, I just use acrylic gloss medium. Its cheap, and perfect, and makes the best collage medium in the world.

@delirium Oil as in One-Shot? or oil as in Grumbacher? But for something that’s going to be handled a lot, a clear coat would need to be applied.

delirium's avatar

Grumbacher. And you can always varnish it later.

FGS's avatar

@delirium But brush oils don’t have the kind of permanence needed for an Xbox paint job even with varnish.

How much is an Xbox going to move? Mine usually just… sits there…

FGS's avatar

I just assumed the opening and closing an Xbox would entail a bit of moving it (forgive me, I don’t play console games)

@Elumas It’s often on sale at our Ace for a 2 for $7.00….especially around May. Right now I’d think it was just over or just under $5.00 a can.

Del has got me thinking now… are you looking to just change the color, and make it oooh shiny or are you thinking of doing a decorative paint job on it? If it’s the latter, listen to Del!

delirium's avatar

Do the latter!!
I can, if I get around to it, show you some work I did like that on a table. I….still… have to finish it and then its going in the shop.

I have to disagree with you @delirium :/ Oil paints would not be a good idea for an XBOX.

I think spray paint is your best option. Nothing with brushes. What you want to do is tape down areas where you wont spray, and peel them off as they dry. Also, if you want that gloss, just read the label and make sure you get the glossy kinds. If you cant find any, you can find some CHEAP clear glossy spray paint at walmart. I used to use the clear glossy spray paint on my paintings to make em pop out. And make sure you do it outside with newspaper laid out :P
