What's the sci fi novel, set in the far future, about a group of soldiers who have to get to safety by crossing a galaxy that is a virtual gauntlet?

Asked by Kingkamandi (149points) March 24th, 2009

I think the book was written in the 1970s. It was very much like the Clint Eastwood film, THE GAUNTLET, but set in space. I believe one of the soldiers was a woman.

I can think of a couple that have a premise like this, but none written that long ago.

Maybe I’m wrong about the decade? What are the books titles?

Well, very old would be the Lensman Series by E.E. Doc Smith. Then, and I think this was in the ‘70s, was the Forever War by Joe Halderman.

Those are the two that I was thinking that had people crossing a galaxy fighting an enemy. There is plenty of other space opera I read, but none with quite the bent your looking for.l
