How do I phrase a Poker Party invitation?

Asked by bananafish (1114points) March 25th, 2009

I’m throwing my husband a birthday poker party, and don’t know what I’m doing, since I don’t know poker very well.

On the invitation I’d like to say something brief about how guests are encouraged to bringing change or cash for chips. The plan is that we’re going to play a low-rent game: Chips ranging from one penny to one dollar. Is there poker lingo for how to phrase this? Is there an invitation etiquette about this? Should I not even mention it??

And are those stakes too high? Too low? We don’t want anyone losing a bundle (since we’re all broke), but I’m hoping that someone might be able to pick up a little bonus amount.

Any other advice you’d have for a poker party would be great!

It’s called a “low-stakes cash game”
You might want to do chips ranging from 5 cents to a dollar, since one penny is really, really low. :)

Poker game. Nickel, dime, quarter chips. Nickel ante. Maximum bet a dollar, maximum 3 raises per hand. Bring beer.

I always like to risk 10–20 dollars. I feel the game is played too freely and not serious if you put the stakes too low… you’ll just have everyone calling everyone on their bluffs because the stakes are something they can live with. Unless of course you’re just looking for fun, and nothing serious.

And yeah, a Penny is waaay too low. But when you invite people, just be sure to tell them to bring cash, or change to gamble with. And here is a link to types of poker you can play and read about in detail.

Have fun, and let us know how it goes.

Are you making the invitations? You could say something like:

It’s going to be a Full House on <insert date> to celebrate <insert name> 30th birthday.

Bring your change so you can ante up, buy in starts at 5 cents, so it’s anyone’s game.

Be prepared for Straight up fun, food, and maybe even a Flush here or there.

Leave more details here.

You can work with the wording if you want. Sounds like a fun night!
