PSA: Windows users, are you ready for Conficker come April 1st?

Asked by robmandu (21331points) March 26th, 2009

If you haven’t heard of the Conficker worm yet, take the time to read about it. Experts estimate it has infected millions of Windows PCs and that on April 1st, whatever entity is running it will put it into action.

Fortunately for you, the folks at Enigma have released a free Conficker removal tool.

If you want to read more about the low level details about exactly how Conficker does what it does, go check out this Rixstep article.

I get a Page Load Error for Enigma. I’m on Firefox.

Ooh, sounds fun. I’ve had this computer for 2 years and never once had a virus or spyware. But I successfully removed spyware from an older computer. I think I will be prepared should anything happen.

Here’s a nice little update from the good folks at Marshal Trace News.

Gosh, I really like what the good folks at Rixstep have to say: Conficker Advice from Auntie Beeb.

Hooboy: looks like it’s kicking into high gear:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/04/09/conficker.activated/index.html
http://www.viruslist.com/en/weblog?weblogid=208187654

Now it downloads and installs additional apps… one is apparently heavily encrypted and its purpose is only guessed at as being a keylogger (hidden behind a rootkit). The other appears to be some kind of fake anti-virus utility that tries to charge you $49.95.
