Vegeterians: Have you ever accidently ate meat?

Asked by electricsky (825points) March 26th, 2009

Today I went into a chinese resturant and I ordered and egg roll. I forgot to ask if there was meat in it and when it came I took a big bite and realized… it was filled with pork. Ick.
Though on a slightly different note it can’t compare to the time when I was about 9 and I told my mom I wanted to try meat.
She bought me Spam.
Thanks, mom.
So, to the vegeterian community, have you ever had any experiences with meat like that?

It happens occasionally. I usually just deal with it, as I won’t bring the animal back to life by sending it back, and it would be wasting food. I do let them know of the problem, though.

I don’t think I qualify for this question but I’d like to ask you a question:
Do you feel disgusted for eating meat or do you take it as an honest mistake and forgive yourself?

3 or 4 times over the past 20 years, so not too bad. But when it’s happened, it is indeed very gross. quick napkin clutch, discreetly discard…

@Yuchen: Both. I feel disgusted for eating it (even that little bite), but I also forgive myself because it was an honest mistake and there’s nothing I can do about it.
@mcbealer: Lol, I got so freaked out when I realized I’d eaten it I almost just spit it right back out. But I figured it would’ve been a bit rude.

@ yuchen. I have made this mistake before. But I understand that we all mess up and it isn’t of bad intentions.

(psst- Vegetarian).I am generally pretty careful about it. If a sliver of chicken, for example, shows up in soup, I remove it if possible.

i am not a vegetarian but i do remember a few years ago it came out that mcdonald’s uses beef fat (or should i say USED) for it’s french fries and vegetarians everywhere were upset because they ate the fries thinking it was in keeping with their beliefs, but then found out they were eating meat byproduct all along. mcd’s had to change it’s frying fat but it was a little deceptive of them.

not a vegan any more, but i do remember eating vegetables seasoned with pork and fish fried in lard. i did not know how the food was prepared at the time and i was sick as sand!

I have a couple times. It didn’t gross me out. I actually like meat, it tastes great and there are many healthy varieties—the reason I stay away from it is because of the system we have in place for getting meat.

Then again, I also was thinking about my ability to actually kill an animal for eating; say a chicken. I don’t think I could decapitate and clean out a chicken and then eat it (unless I was starving)... so if I’m not willing to do the deed, then I don’t feel right benefiting from it.

It happens. Sometimes its obvious, sometimes not. I recently realized that my favorite “vegetarian” pad thai was made with fish sauce. If you want to be sure of what you’re getting, you have to ask very specific questions. Don’t assume that a vegetable-based dish is meat-free.

I won’t continue to eat something if I discover there is meat in it, just like I won’t just peel off pepperoni and eat the pizza. Each of us draws our lines at different levels.

Well, not to alarm the vegetarians on here, but I hope like Hell you don’t eat Jell-O. Gelatin is made from the boiled bones and tendons of livestock, usually cows and pigs. Gelatin made from animals is in a lot of different products, including vitamin capsules.

well @evelyns_pet_zebra i would hope that most vegetarians/vegans on fluther are educated. and not all jello like substances are made out of ground up bones. I eat fruit pectin gelatin.

gailcalled's avatar

And no self-respecting vegetarians/ vegans would ever eat commercial jello unless strapped to a hospital bed.

When I first stopped eating pork and beef, it slipped my mind to read the ingredients of refried beans… I bought a kind that added lard GROSS but now know to buy fat free beans! :)

electricsky's avatar

@BBSDTfamily: ...And so do I! Thanks, I was gonna buy some tomorrow for tacos but now I figure I’ll read the ingredients first. :)

mcbealer's avatar

@electricsky ~ if you can find them locally, the refried beans with the Taco Bell label are vegetarian.
