OY!! Why can't I move this icon to trash?

Asked by rowenaz (2436points) March 28th, 2009

why ever did I switch teams?? I downloaded a flash player, but now I can’t get the icon off my desktop. the one that says, “Install Flash Player” – what the hey?? when I try to drag it, the trash can disappears. When I click on it and then go to help, it bonks at me.

I was going to say shift-delete, but you’re on a mac.

Good luck, you’ll need it.

I’m not on a Mac, but this should work anyway, I think.

In a terminal window, first type “cd Desktop” [Enter], then type “ls” [Enter], which should give you a list of files on your desktop. Then see what the file name is for that icon (I don’t know, it might be “Install Flash Player”, I’ll assume that’s it and if not, replace that with the actual file name), then type “rm Install\ Flash\ Player” [Enter] (you need to add a backslash in front of spaces, alternatively, you can type the first few letters, e.g. “Inst”, then press [Tab] to have it autocompleted). It should now be removed, I suppose. Not sure if it will immediately show on the desktop or whether you need to logout and back in.

Oh, and don’t say “why ever did I switch teams??”, Mac-people get offended by that :P

ohh, “switch teams to a Mac”. I was trying to figure out what being gay or straight had to do with your computer : )

@Vincentt – TERMINAL? How long has it been since you’ve used a Mac?

@rowenaz – I’m assuming, as a new user, you’re using the latest version of Mac OSX? You seem frustrated. Don’t worry, it will all be wonderful and smooth in no time. =)

Is the install filetype a DMG? To find out, Control-click on the icon and click “Get Info”. If it is a DMG, you have to eject the disc image first.

Open a finder window, look to the upper left-hand side of the frame. You should see something with an eject symbol next to it. Click the eject symbol. You may have an error here, if you have files within the disc image open. Close stuff until it ejects. Then, delete the original file by
(1) dragging to the garbage can,
(2) hold Control, click on the icon, and select “Move to Trash”, or
(3) press the Apple key + the Tab key + the Delete key at the same time.
or (4) going through Terminal, as @Vincentt said

Let us know if this works. Or maybe you tried using Terminal (doubtful, since it’s hidden within the Utilities folder and most users don’t even know what it is).

@shadling21 – this week, at school. The terminal is configured in our dock by default*. And at least that’s a part of Macs I know my way around, so that’s a way I can help.

* I didn’t know it was as hard to find as other applications by default.

Sorry I like pissing of Apple fanboys :P

Is the icon for the file itself? Or is it for the disk image of the file?

You’ll need to eject the disk image (which usually looks like a white disk icon) before you can trash the file.

@Vincentt – Oh, that’s pretty cool. I’m no computer whiz, and I thought that Terminal was buried within folders because it wasn’t that useful. Do you find you use it a lot? I thought most operations were possible outside of it?

@fullOFuselessINFO – I like the word “OY”. It made me listen.

Vincentt's avatar

@shadling21 – well, I use Xubuntu, and the terminal shell there is the same as on Macs. On Xubuntu, I also don’t really use it because indeed, everything I do is possible outside of it, but I know my way around it for basic things like this, so it was a way I could help :).

(Though when I’m on a Mac, I do use the terminal a lot, but that’s because I need to use it for school, where they use Macs…)
