I’m interested in getting into something at home that I can do on the side to supplement income. How do you get into something like this?

My work stems from the work that I did at the last company I worked for. I help smaller companies streamline their inventory and also track the demand of their products. I also set up programs for construction (usually smaller companies) to track their projects. From tracking the planning/ permit stage on through the engineering and construction stages – to completion. Last, but not least, I develop databases for those that have no desire to dedicate the time to do it for themselves!

I also do the accounting side for my husband’s side business. The pay really stinks for that job!

I started because people I worked with contacted me and asked if I would do contract work for them – it’s just grown from there.

I work from home. I work as a systems engineer. I specialize in Intel hardware and mid to low range storage. Mostly I draw up designs but I also do support.

I love working from home since I have a 30 second commute to the office. Down side is that I’m a people person and miss interacting with co-workers at the water cooler and such.

@Dog All of the above. Although a pair of ‘85 Jordan’s might be wearable, most choose to display them, etc…

I started freelancing as a personal assistant when I lived in San Francisco – now that I’ve moved to Pittsburgh, I’ve kept a lot of my SF clients, and I work for them long-distance (which means working from home). I basically do whatever people need me to do, which frequently means research of some kind, online office/file organization, or building websites (I don’t do major web design, but I’m pretty proficient in the basics…)

If you want to start working from home, think about what skills you have that you can do for other people long-distance. Are you really good at something computer-based (Web design, creating complicated Excel spreadsheets, selling things on Ebay)? Can you make something that people would buy? There’s all sorts of things you can do – you just have to find your niche and market yourself well.

Yes I have an online store mainly during the winter which I sell mostly vintage collectibles, antiques which I buy at live auctions.
During the other 3 seasons I have a corporation that I run- which consists of commercial and residential window cleaning and pressure cleaning.

sort of, I do some translation work sometimes, or used to. Just pocket money though, it never got off the ground properly, except once when I did a huge book that won a prize and I bought my first car with the money.

I don’t work right now though, just do the odd lesson or gig and play in an amateur theatre for which I’m also doing the music. Oh and I’m still writing my book (though I haven’t written much lately).
