What is the best program for teaching english abroad?

Asked by plasticpen (43points) March 29th, 2009

I might want to go to another country and teach English. What are the most legit and easy programs for doing this? I know I can just google this, but I was thinking more along the lines of personal experiences (or friends experiences). I was looking at JET in Japan but it looked sketchy given that they place you pretty much anywhere, including random villages hours away from the more appealing cities.

Note: I only speak English.

JET is a very well respected program. It’s fairly difficult to get into, especially if you do not know Japanese.

It would really help us recommend programs if you knew where you wanted to go. However, there are many, many programs that do not allow you to choose the specific city within the nation that you travel to, which is to say, there is a chance of being stuck in a very small town in any of them.

I’m really down to go just about anywhere. I don’t know any Japanese at all, so I guess JET is out. If the random placement is the case, then so be it, I guess I have a chance of being placed in a small town. I’m just looking at different options and programs that aren’t as selective given that I only speak English.

Honestly, there is a really good chance that you are always going to be the last choice after candidates that speak the native language. However, my friend did a Korean program where he did not have to know the language. Programs in places with more common languages like Spain (or any Spanish speaking nation), France, and Germany are probably going to be out for you. Try thinking of less common places that you’d really like to go, then find a program.

I will try and find out the name of the Korean program my friend did and let you know.

I haven’t taught English abroad but I know several people who have, or have tried to. As far as I understand it, once you decide on a country you won’t have a lot of control regarding where specifically they place you. Strangely enough I always see postings for these types of programs on Craigslist job boards (under “education”), and yes, generally they’re for South Korea, so that might be your best bet.
