Can this ipod be saved?

I have an ancient ipod mini. The computer with the itunes it is synced to is long dead. It hasn’t held a charge for more than five minutes for quite awhile now, but when I hooked it up to my laptop it didn’t charge at all. All I want to be able to do is get the music off of it back onto my laptop so I would rather not pay to replace the battery. Any suggestions?
