RedPowerLady's avatar

How did you decide upon your picture and for what reason?

Asked by RedPowerLady (12598points) April 1st, 2009

I thought it would be neat to learn how/why everyone chose their avatars. It would be also beneficial for the newbies to learn how to choose good ones (it took me awhile to figure out how to get a good quality one). I searched about 10 times to see if this question had already been asked but did not find any similar, my apologies if it has (still might be fun for us newbies to read).

Oh, mine is so boring. I can tell you right now that all of my avatars are going to be pictures of me; that’s just something I like to do. This one was taken at a get-together with some of my friends. I just liked the angle even though it really shows just how big my nose is…

And who cares if it’s been asked before? Avatars always change so it’s always relevant! ;)

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Dansedescygnes I didn’t even notice your nose
I typically use pictures of myself too. Makes sense to me. I’m trying something new this time. LOL.

TitsMcGhee's avatar

I know it can’t really be read, but it’s a wall that has “DO NOT BE AFRAID” spray painted onto it. It was something I saw that just struck me; it was oddly inspirational. I used it as a cover to a mix I made that I thought was particularly successful. I have a few others in the queue, but I think I’ll stick with this one because I’ve gotten a bit attached. I also get really confused when people change their avatars because I don’t instantly recognize them when I’m scrolling down a thread.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@TitsMcGhee I think that is inspiring as well. and I get confused too when people switch, i enjoy noticing someone by avatar

Kraken's avatar

Yarr, Red Power Lady, for sooth, I be the Kraken of the nether depths unbeknownst to mankind.

Kraken's avatar

@Dansedescygnes I never intend to change this Avatar Dommy, it’s the perfect one for my Fluther persona. All naval craft are now fairly warned.

Bluefreedom's avatar

Even though you can’t see it very well, my avatar is an American Bald Eagle shedding a single tear with the World Trade Center towers burning in the lower left corner. Someone sent me that picture not long after 9–11 happened and those two images together were so poignant to me that I just felt compelled to adopt the complete image for all my avatars on all the websites I’ve ever been on.

YARNLADY's avatar

I like to use pictures that are interesting. It’s almost Easter now, hence the rabbit ears, but often I will choose to show off some of my work. I change about once a month or so.

prasad's avatar

eh…I’d better put up my own photo…I’m new too.

TitsMcGhee's avatar

@prasad: I always like when people have their own avatar (whether it is a photo of you or not) because it’s a more personal way to recognize and distinguish you, rather than the stock images that everyone has. It’s almost like a fluther rite of passage.

prasad's avatar

@TitsMcGhee I do agree.
I want to…and I’m in search of…as soon as I get one I will.

jrpowell's avatar

Allie told me to use it. It is easier to just say “yes”.

Zen's avatar

@TitsMcGhee @RedPowerLady I’ll keep this avatar for a while then.

Actually, it was one of the first I used on wis.dm about a year ago. It was in response to a discussion about ST and such. It is very clear, and conveys a certain message I can identify with. I like Picard, and the actor himself, but not a huge fan… it just sort of works for me, I think.

I love the question, though. And becase I am both colour-blind and also do not see very well in general, I tend to read (the words, into the words, between the lines) much more than I notice the avatar anyway. But once in a while, an avatar does express something – it could be artistic, or political, or funny. It’s all good.

Amoebic's avatar

I chose this avatar because I feel like the happyface most of the time.

jo_with_no_space's avatar

It is a random image I found online, and I felt like it captured somehow a little of me, or how I want to be :)

Trustinglife's avatar

Since you asked… I like my smile and confidence in this picture. And I think I look hot in black. You can see it better when you enlarge it to its true size.

rooeytoo's avatar

Mine is my new dog. She is so smart and bright and when she looks into your eyes, which she frequently does, you just know there is some reincarnated person in there. She is part dingo, part kelpie, probably a little red heeler and who knows what else!

How do you enlarge avatars to true size?

dynamicduo's avatar

Mine is a dynamic crop of the 60s Batman, Adam West. It matches my username.

Maldadpermanente's avatar

Probably because is weird and don’t picture me at all. You can say I’m hiding behind my avatar.

jonsblond's avatar

My husband (blondesjon) and I like to use famous couples as our avatars. We like to change them about every week or so, so expect to see some new faces from us soon.

MissAusten's avatar

When I first signed up two whole days ago, I started scrolling through my photos to find something I liked. I’m not sure what made me choose this little fairy. It’s part of a series of fairies my husband painted in a little girl’s room. This avatar probably won’t stay long though because it doesn’t feel like “me.”

Mr_M's avatar

The one with the red glasses is a recent photo.

fireside's avatar

Mine is actually a photo from Dennis Mammana of a solar eclipse.

Not sure how I came across it, but it just fit.

AstroChuck's avatar

I just couldn’t resist using this picture of this adorable little guy.
He’s just so cherubic.

Dog's avatar

I like to rotate out my paintings but usually stick with the dog one. She was the first homeless dog I painted, a beautiful senior black lab/pit mix.

She was the faithful loving companion to a homeless man. She had never known a stable home but knew love and affection. Her warm and sweet disposition made her a favorite among the homeless population. So much so that when her owner became so ill that he had to be hospitalized it was a fellow homeless man who saved up and bailed her out of a high-kill animal shelter to live with him in the meager room that he rented in order to be allowed to adopt her.

Sadly, as is often the case with the transient population, he lost his home and She was again impounded- taken back to the shelter. This shelter has hundreds of dogs and euthanizes after a short time but again her loving gentle spirit earned her the compassion of the staff who, for an unprecedented three months kept her from lethal injection.

When She could no longer elude the fate ahead of her she was mysteriously transferred to another shelter. It was there that I met her, heard her story and painted her. She then beat all the odds for an old dog and was adopted into a loving home. She has inspired me to use over 200 homeless pets as models for most of my domestic animal art.

I’ve liked squirrels since I was little. We have tons of trees around our area & lots of squirrels. My husband put a feeder on a big fir tree in our front yard & we keep it filled with shelled corn year round. They’re so much fun to sit & watch in there, eating away holding the corn in their little paws.

I wanted to find a picture of Angela Lansbury to go with my name, but I didn’t find anything that I liked. So I just combined two things I love.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Dog You PAINTED that??!! WOW! I’m impressed!

gailcalled's avatar

My maternal grandmother’s vase and peonies and the rose from my daughter’s garden.

Dog's avatar

@jbfletcherfan :blush: thanks :)

fireside's avatar

@Dog – wow, i always thought it was a photograph. Very nice!

syz's avatar

Mine’s a picture of myself from a period in my life that I miss very much.

casheroo's avatar

i tried a couple until i found one that showed up clearly. i just like the picture.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

It’s a Cremesicle, who’s going take offense at a Cremesicle?
Besides, once you’re through the icy tart exterior then it’s all creamy goodness inside.

Zen's avatar

@hungryhungryhortence Cremesicles are the best! Especially orange.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Kraken You’re right it does fit your personality :)

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Bluefreedom You’re name and picture fit perfectly together.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Yarnlady Oh no I don’t know how i’m going to recognize you without the rabbit ears, lol

RedPowerLady's avatar

@johnpowell Well Allie certainly had a good idea. That dog is so cute!

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Zen I like Picard as well.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Amoebic It is so cute and happy :)

RedPowerLady's avatar

@jo_with_no_space Isn’t it great when we find an image like that??

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Trustinglife LOL. Now don’t be modest… :)

RedPowerLady's avatar

@rooeytoo The dog is so cute! Hubby always says he wants a dog that is part Dingo. (We already have a pooch though). I tell him no way, Dingo’s eat babies, that’s scary. So I don’t know if that is true but they do have a bad rap.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@dynamicduo I was told once that my great aunt knew the original batman actor (i’m bad with actor names). She was an old actress, not widely known but still she was one. Heck I don’t even know her real name, we just called her Aunt Doo Doo (endearingly), lol.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@jonsblond I didn’t know you chose couples, that is so cute.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@MissAusten I like your avatar. It doesn’t remind me of your online personality either but I do like the picture.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Mr_M Is it a self portrait?

RedPowerLady's avatar

@fireside It is a Beautiful picture and matches your avatar perfectly

RedPowerLady's avatar

@AstroChuck I like seeing that avatar, it is just so cute, can’t help but smile when I see it.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Dog I had no idea that was a painting. You must be quite talented! I think your art idea is beautiful and inspiring btw. Our city has a good program that helps the homeless keep their pets, they get free vet care and free food.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@jbfletcherfan I LOVE squirrels. I think they get a bad rap. I have a squirrel feeder. I put peanut butter bread in it and they love it. Our dog hates it, lol.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@gailcalled It is such a warm and lovely avatar, i really enjoy looking at it.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@syz Wow I can see why you would miss it.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@casheroo Your picture makes me laugh everytime I see it. It is so cute and shows up so clearly.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@hungryhungryhortence You’re right, who doesn’t like a creamsicle? LOL

Dog's avatar

@RedPowerLady That rocks about the homeless keeping their pets!

YARNLADY's avatar

@RedPowerLady I’m going to report you to the mods for too many responses in a row. a/f

MissAusten's avatar

Ah, this guy is so much better! I just love this devil mantis. I wish they were native to CT. :(

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Yarnlady Is that really a rule?

YARNLADY's avatar

@RedPowerLady On this day it is.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Yarnlady You got me! I believed you till I saw another post of yours. Good one! I’ve got a big grin on my face :)

wundayatta's avatar

At least it’s not a horse’s a**!

RedPowerLady's avatar

@daloon Yours is definitely one of the most interesting avatars. Did you happen upon the behind or did you take candid self snapshots, perhaps it is a secret?

wundayatta's avatar

Oh dear me, no. I went on a search to find that that took me to at least two countries (at least, virtually). I was looking for something very specific. This wasn’t exactly it, but it did add some additional features which I thought were appropriate, so it became me. I’ve written on here, somewhere, what it means. Just look for one of the other avatar explanation questions.

Part of the reason I’m on fluther is that they let me use the avatar. On Askville, people complained, and found it offensive. Humorless dweebs! Censorship lives, I guess. Surprising, but when it got taken down the first time, it really threw me for a loop, mentally. I was very distressed. I almost quit Askville entirely. I wish that I had, now.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@daloon I don’t find it offensive at all. It is way too funny to be offensive. I looked for the other avatar questions using search and couldn’t find any (only reason I asked this one) but perhaps my search skills are inadequate.

YARNLADY's avatar

@daloon Why would they? There’s no rules against having ugly knees.

fireside's avatar

It does seem like a pretty painful tattoo session would be required for daloon’s avatar

YARNLADY's avatar

@fireside Nah, that’s those temporary, stick on kind, can’t you tell?

casheroo's avatar

i actually thought they did have a rule, they modded the other day for someone making multiple posts…

YARNLADY's avatar

@casheroo yes, they do have a rule against multiple posts. I was just trying to get her in trouble hahahahahahahahaha

RedPowerLady's avatar

@casheroo @Yarnlady well it’s my thread, so there~
But honestly next time I can just put it all in one post I suppose.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@daloon Thanx, that was enlightening, you bada**

essieness's avatar

After an inspiring conversation in the chat room today, I decided to change my avatar to a picture of my 3 year old self in a full track suit. Apparently, I was about to run a marathon.

Trustinglife's avatar

Ooh, that is cute!
