Anyone have experience with Dexedrine for ADD?

Asked by Likeradar (19583points) April 1st, 2009

I have inattention type ADHD. I was finally diagnosed about 8 years ago (I’m 28 now). I’ve been hesitant to medicate it because I’ve been passably ok without drugs. I tried Welbutrin once but hated it. I decided it’s time to medicate it because I’m in grad school and having serious focus issues, and I’m sick of other areas of my life are kinda out of control.

I got put on Dexadrine. Holy crap, I feel a difference after just 2 days. Some of the effects are great- I cleaned my apartment, did a lot of reading, my normally huge appetite is almost gone. But I’m also feeling kind of warm, and I’m really talkative and I feel like I just can’t get enough done fast enough!

I’m wondering what other people’s experiences with this drug are. I already googled and read user reviews, but I want to be able to converse about it, not just read.

Thanks!

Just wondering, why were you on Wellbutrin for ADHD? I just went off it (side effects) and I’m bipolar w/ depression.

Likeradar's avatar

@aviona I also have depression, and they it’s good for both. I think it’s good for nothing

aviona's avatar

@Likeradar haha you and me both.

I have experience with dexedrine for LOTS AND LOTS OF FUN.

ADHD, not so much.

aviona's avatar

hahahaha.

@nikipedia you’ve used it recreationally? What’s it just like speed?

Likeradar's avatar

@nikipedia Can you give details? What do and don’t you like about it?
I’m adjusting to this feeling and I’m not sure if I like it or not yet. I’m leaning towards yes, but I’m not sure… my heart’s beating kinda fast and my hands are sweaty.

Sounds like it’s increasing your ADD @Likeradar

Likeradar's avatar

@aviona Not really. I’m hyper focused, which is a totally new feeling for me. I’m liking that part a lot. The other effects are kinda weird.
I know stimulants take some time to get used to.

Okay, I know that feeling, which is very different. Well, hopefully someone responds directly to your question and the Dexedrine keeps working for ya!

@aviona and @Likeradar:

Here is a picture of the chemical structure of dexedrine.

Here is a picture of the chemical structure of methamphetamine (speed, crank, crystal meth, etc).

Yes, it is just like speed.

Things I liked about it: feeling brilliant and wonderful about myself, getting tons of things done, thinking I was the funniest and most charming person on earth, getting really skinny and hot.

Things I disliked about it: coming down and hating everything and being a horrible bitch.

This should be helpful.

aviona's avatar

@nikipedia wowww. Wait, so you took it for an extended period of time?

Likeradar's avatar

@boots Thanks. I’ve already done lots and lots of (very focused) online reading. I wanted to be able to ask questions.

@nikipedia- What dose did you take and for how long? The diet part of it is not the reason I’m taking it, but I’d be a liar if I said I’m not hoping for a great side effect!

kenmc's avatar

@Likeradar Just remember (as I’m sure you know and have been told) that it’s used as a street drug on account of the minuscule differences between that and Speed… So be careful, ok?

Likeradar's avatar

@boots thanks for the concern

aviona's avatar

@Likeradar hahha “very focused” online reading.

@aviona and @Likeradar: I started taking 20mg every now and then. Within a month or so, I started to notice the effects decreasing and would take a second 20mg pill. Within probably 6 months, I was up to 4 20mg pills or so to achieve the same effect that 1 20mg pill used to achieve.

I definitely did not use it every day. My usage waxed and waned with availability. Overall, I would say I used it between one and seven times per week for ten months or so. I lost about 20 pounds in that time. Also I was a raging bitch by the end of it. That was not the only drug I used, but it was probably the primary one.

@nikipedia Thanks for the info! I’m on 5mg 2x a day, so it’s low. My dr told me I’d probably want it upped eventually.
How do you think the drug contributed to your bitchiness? wow, that sounded bad. Can’t think of another way to word it though!
