How can I secure my home internet connection?

Asked by emilyrose (2272points) April 2nd, 2009

We use comcast. In the past we had some issues with some of us not being able to sign on when the network was secured. Not sure if it was a mac vs PC thing. Lately our service has been awful and I think it’s because our neighbors are using it. I know that at least some of them are because they told me. How can I get a password onto our network?

it’s actually not difficult in either case. you’re referring to a wireless network, correct? and when you write “log on” what exactly do you mean? i don’t know any people that have to log on to the wireless router once their machine is configured. i use comcast as well and it’s great. what model router are you using?

thanks—- yes it is wireless. We have a network name. I want to secure our individual network with a password. Right now it’s open. When I “view available wireless networks” ours is the only one in range that doesn’t require a password to use. Does that help? Do you know what to do?

to secure your network you must first configure your router, then each compute you want to access your network. your router’s installation/setup guide should walk you through this process. what is the model of your router?

not sure, will have to look into it. i am so not techy ; )

Go to 168.192.1.1 in a browser. That should bring up your modem’s page. Using your modem’s manual for direction, change your wireless settings from WEP encryption to WAP encryption with a password. It might be helpful to call your ISP’s tech support line and have them walk you through it.

call your isp is a great piece of advice in any case
