Can you help me name my chinchilla?

Asked by crisw (14145points) April 2nd, 2009

I recently adopted a chinchilla from the Humane Society. She came with the spectacularly unoriginal name of “Cheech.” She is three, typical chinchila color but a bit darker than most. She is an active, friendly critter and she deserves a better name, but I’m at an impasse. I like biological names (I was thinking “Lani” after the chinchilla’s scientific name, C. laniger) or perhaps an Incan name, but I couldn’t find anything that struck my fancy. I’d prefer a simple, short name she might actually learn. Any cute ideas?

@asmonet I think you’re right, but seriously, people just set me up for this. It’s too easy.

I understand, I’m kind of in love with that name, even from before I came to Fluther. :)

How about: Ekkekko? -Kekko for short. Granted it’s a male god and your Chin is female but still it’s cool, Incan, and he’s a god of good fortune.

Lunch. ;-) Hi Cris!

Is this your first chinchilla? How about “Da Mao”, loosely meaning, “First cute furry”? Call her “Da-Da”, or something as a pet name. (pardon the pun)

Chile or Ande, since they come from the Andes Mountains in Chile.
Chilidae (pronounce it Chili D or Chilly Day – CD for short) from the name of the family they belong to, Chinchilidae.

If you don’t like Cheech, how about Chong?

Since she already has the name Cheech, maybe you could change it to something that sounds kinda like that, like maybe ChiChi.

@larsalan – one man’s opinion….and I hope your sister didn’t let you near Gizmo!

“p.s. those things are useless/crappy pets”

I’ve had almost every type of small animal imaginable, and I think the chinchilla would be at the top of my list of great pets! Long lifespan, easy to care for, friendly, large enough to handle, quiet, odorless- what more could you want ? :>D

@crisw something like a cat. That isn’t dropping turds nonstop and will let you touch it for more than 2 seconds. The chinchilla is cute but it is annoying as all hell. I can’t decide if it’s more like a rat or a squirrel.
