Asked by gilgamesh (227points) November 22nd, 2007

i’ve heard Nirvana’s cover of ” the man who sold the world ” and was blown away. evidently it wasn’t nirvana and it was david bowie and i love the original song too. There are too many albums to choose and i need help finding a good album to start listening to.

‘Changesbowie’ is a nice one since it covers a variety of years and has a bunch of his hits on it. I’m also a fan of ‘Hunky Dory.’

If you don’t want to start with “Changes One” or any of the other “best of” collections out there I would highly recommend “Ziggy Stardust” – great from start to finish!

Ziggy Stardust is an outstanding album from his best period.
A good later album is Let’s Dance.

I recommend Hunky Dory: It was his first truly great LP, and probably has more in common with the track The Man Who Sold the World than does the LP of the same name. Bear in mind that Ziggy was recorded very soon after Hunky Dory but is pitched much more as a rock ‘n’ roll LP, and you’ll get some sense of just how much the man was developing as an artist during this period. From there, I’d fast forward to ‘76 and Station to Station to see what global domination, satanic persecution fantasies, fascistic leanings and cocaine did to him (in a word, stunning), then see how he pulled things back working with Eno on Low, Heroes, and Lodger, before stopping to admire the confidant work of a genuine legend on Scary Monsters. You can definitely take a breather then before embarking on any of a half dozen other journeys through Bowie’s oeuvre. Later highlights include Heathen and Outside, but your mileage may vary.

I like Alladin Sane(Drive-in Saturday, The Jean Genie etc.) or Station to Station(TVC-15, Golden Years etc.) but you really cant go wrong with any of these suggestions so far. As an aside, congratulations on discovering the greatest recording artist of the last half of the twentieth century, “The Divine Alien”. Yor are now officially the coolest person in your school!
