Do you think blue ray DVD players are worth the money?

Asked by stars (95points) April 4th, 2009 from iPhone

I have an HD TV and wondering if those Blue-Ray DVD players were as good as some people say.

The quality is pretty sweet. I have Blu-Ray on my laptop that I plug in to my HD TV to watch movies. It really is amazing to see the crispness of it.

I paid an extra $150 for the Blu-Ray feature. I know I’ll be able to get a Blu-ray drive for $20 soon enough, but I was already buying a whole laptop, so the extra wasn’t that big of a difference. Would I pay $150 for a complete player? No, I’ll wait until the price comes down. As it is, I’ve only played a dozen discs on this thing in the past five months, but I’m still happy I got it on the system because I know that I’d need it and not have it if I didn’t get it.

Is it worth it to you? That depends on how patient you are, how much you earn, and if it’s a big deal to you when you learn that you paid for the development of the technology, instead of just the production and shipping costs like the guy who buys it for $20 a little later.

There is very little difference in the video on a blu-ray disc. The real difference is in the surround sound. If you are very focused on the sound, going blu might be a good idea.
As someone who has had VHS and Laserdiscs, and spent a fortune upgrading, I am very happy with my standard DVD.

Depends on the movie. Same with 5.1 versus normal stereo. For many movies it just doesn’t make much of a difference.

Well yes, the quality is very high, and if you have an HDTV then you will certainly see a difference in watching movies.

For me though, the price is simply wrong at this time. Not to mention you have to buy Blu-ray DVDs to see the difference (it won’t magically make your regular DVDs look better).

That said, I do intend to get a Blu-ray player eventually, though I may do that by buying the PS3, as I have never had a stand-alone DVD player nor do I want to, what a single purposed device, compared to buying a console.

Just to be clear, you have to have an HDTV that has 1080p to get the full benefit (as opposed to just plain 720p).....

Additionally, if you use Netflix, they are charging extra (or will be very soon) to get BlueRay discs….something to factor in to the cost/benefit ratio….

@Snoopy I hadn’t heard that Netflix will charge more, but it certainly could be true. I have Netflix and we get blu-ray. They don’t charge us more, yet.

@stars The other problem with Blu-ray is about once every six months you’ll get a disc that can’t be played on it. You have to go to the website of the manufacturer and get a firmware update. It’s not hard, it’s just annoying.

And I just checked Blockbuster—they don’t charge more for Blu-Ray
