How can I transfer my iPod library to Windows Media Player?

Asked by Blondesjon (33994points) April 6th, 2009

I would really like to do this for free. All of the file changing software I have looked at wants money from me.

Ugh….yeah. Not sure if that’s possible. Not sure how, but if you could find a recording device that records output as well as input, you can transfer it with some work and possible lower quality.

But as far as something being fast, free, and good quality, don’t hold your breath on it.

Here’s a long and consuming way: burn your iTunes library as audio CDs, then rip the CDs as mp3s which will work in WMP (you can also rip them as wma but unless you have a player that can only run wma files, I recommend mp3).

Of course, if your library is big enough, this will be an expensive and time consuming avenue, but at least you’ll have burned copies of all your music as a backup.

Wait for windows media player 12. Then import the library as is from iTunes.

Your iPod stores all MP3 files on the drive itself, with the audio information on it. You can use a batch tagging application (I often use Audio Tag Tool, I suppose EasyTag can do it as well) to move the files according to their tags. For example, I can have them all sorted according to the pattern ”<artist>/<artist> – <title>.mp3”. I suppose you can then import them in WMP like you’d do with normal libraries.

That is, assuming Apple didn’t encrypt all music files in something you cannot access without their software in later iPod versions – I hold them capable of it.

Are any of the files AAC or Apple Lossless?

@hiphiphopflipflapflop…Not that I’m aware of.

I am trying to upload music from my iTunes library (M4A) to another site that I belong to that only allows the MP3 format.

I figured that if I could transfer them to my WMP then I would be able to upload them from there.

Does that clarify things at all?

If any of them were bought from the iTunes Store, they will be AAC format, just so you know. I was under the impression they could not be played by WMP, but a short search shows there is a plugin that allows WMP to handle those.
