How to build a robot?

Asked by clanky (16points) April 11th, 2009

Anyone have any suggestions on good robot building kits? Preferably a learn-as-you-go logic/electronics/AI issues sorta thing for the smart 14 year old.

LEGO Mindstorms is great for anyone who wants to learn about robotics. It isn’t very difficult to learn, and the possibilities are endless. It requires a decent investment (around $200 – $300) but it is well worth it (IMHO).

I’ll second the LEGO Mindstorms kit. One of the best investments you’ll ever make.

One of the colleges in my area, California University of Pennsylvania, sells a startup kit for robotics, which contains some motors, wireless recievers, controller, etc. for a few hundred dollars. I am a high school student and recently took place in a robotics competition there. The kit was purchased by my school so I don’t know the exact price. It appears that their website is down but it would be something to look into in a year or two.

It’s not robotic, but a good online outlet for the kid may be Fantastic Contraption

It would probably help him to visualize some of the things that he could do with tht tactile kits. Though i haven’t been on the site in a while and it looks like they bogged it down with ads : (
