Getting stoned before I have my wisdom tooth out - yay or nay?

Asked by nocountry2 (3689points) April 11th, 2009 from iPhone

Getting one out on Thursday with local anesthesia only (Dr. told me I look like “the strong type” and won’t put me out. Wtf.). Since getting baked after oral surgery is probably not a wise sanitary option, wondering if it will help with the pain/discomfort beforehand.

For me personally smoking would not work very well at all, it would probably make it worse. I always take a few xanax or valium before going in.

I would totally avoid it. You need things to be working as well as possible, and you don’t want them extracting things while you have cottonmouth. Also, given the more serious nature of the procedure, you don’t want to get all weirded out with potential paranoia beforehand.

If you really want to chill a little bit more, ask for Valium or Xanax. Given the fact that the doc won’t put you out, he should be willing to write for one or two of those.

whoops, looks like kelly beat me to it

Local anesthesia is more than sufficient for one wisdom tooth. I had a student dentist take one out it only took a minute or two. The risk of sedation isn’t worth the hassle for that.

As for the smoking pot, if the dentist suspects you have he may refuse to proceed and and charge you for the appointment so I wouldn’t.

I would just go with a Valium.. My sister just broke her arm..

Overmedicating is a definite danger. Do not use any substance without telling your doctor first. If you don’t agree with his assessment about you being the “strong type” then tell him about it and ask for more prescription or office sedative. I told me doctor I am an absolute baby, and he gave me a prescription for a tranquilizer the night before.

No. That’s a really dumb idea, and your surgeon will not work on you if he suspets you are high.
Valium and Xanax are good options, I don’t think a dentist can write a script for that, tell him to call your primary care physician, to phone in a prescription for one or two pills.

I agree with casheroo @ yarnlady- just tell him you want the sedative. He works for you, your paying for this.

I would certainly not do anything that would be likely to increase my sensory sensitivity. Go with what they give you.

I had one with local, and it was not so bad. Do not smoke anything afterwards. Dry socket is living hell.

nocountry2's avatar

Yeah…I figured it was a dumb idea, but I thought I’d double-check. Thanks Fluther-conscience! maybe I’ll make some brownies for the after-party

@Jeruba said what I was going to say. Pot probably won’t dull the pain, but it could intensify it.

Brownies for the after party sound great.

The drugs they will administer will be powerful enough. No need to potentially complicate things.
I had mine out as a teen and yeah they dope you up good.

I had the bad judgment once to smoke when I had a toothache. I then had the toothache of the world. Learned my lesson.

Yeah, no. Don’t. :)

is your drug of choice a blood thinner? don’t want any of those in your system before any surgery.

HELL NO!!!!

Not another Wis.dm question… ;)

I would have to say no as well. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled it was a horrific experience. I will spare the details, but I can’t imagine not being totally with it during, and especially after, the procedure. Stick to legal pain killers and let the professionals do their job.

The cross between thc and the gas they give you, can make you feel like you are on acid. Been there. I don’t recommended it

asmonet's avatar

Yeah, acid trip + some creepy dude wearing a mask + bright lights + scalpel….

Fuck that.

Mamradpivo's avatar

The doctor will numb you enough not to feel any pain. And even if you don’t tend to get paranoid, that’s before a bunch of people in masks and goggles start putting their hands and various metal tools in your mouth. That freaks me out when I’m perfectly sober, I can’t imagine what it would be like when stoned.

El_Cadejo's avatar

I wouldnt smoke first. It could make you feel everything much more intensely and make it a lot worse. Ask them for nitrous and then just breathe really heavy for a minute or two. You wont know where the fuck you are or really even care for that matter after that.

I got a tooth pulled a couple months ago and honestly forgot i was in the dentist office after a couple min of nitrous. I came out of it like wait…where the fuck am i….what the hell are you doing in my room….wait a minute…im at the dentist office…..oh look at that, im missing a tooth…. hmmm ok then. Nitrous Oxide ftw :P

no smoking afterwards for a while, before, no problem. it’s the sucking on the inhale that causes most of the problem afterwards
