How would Fluther have made a difference in your life during high school?

Asked by aviona (3260points) April 16th, 2009

If you had known about Fluther or if it had existed while you were in high school how would it have helped or hurt you? Or would it not have made a difference in your life at all, perhaps?

I probably would have gotten even less homework and studying done. :)
That’s the only difference I can think of.

Man, that would have been weird. People would always be trying to figure out a person’s fluther identity. I think people would be much less open, just in case they were found out.

However, maybe I would have met a few more people like me. Maybe I would have found a way to lose my virginity then, instead of many years later. I know it wouldn’t have worked the way it works here.

It really would NOT have.

Well, I’m currently a senior in high school, and discovered Fluther over 2 years ago. In many cases it’s helped me, I’ve learned a lot on Fluther, about a huge variety of things, things I also probably otherwise would not have even heard of. I’ve also made amazing, amazing friends here, a couple of whom I have no clue how I would have lived through high school without.
On the other hand, being a mod and being addicted to Fluther/chatroom has seriously put a damper on my work ethic. But, ya know, I’d say it’s a fair trade-off. After all, education comes before school, right?

I’ve been coming to sites similar to this one since the end of my freshman year and I’m currently a senior. I think they were positive as they have given me a chance to hear the opinions and thoughts of many different people. Being on sites like this has caused me to become interested in things that I most likely would not have otherwise been interested in. I also love being able to talk to other LGBT people online. The only way it “hurts” is that it can distract me from doing other things sometimes. Usually I am able to call it quits when necessary and take a break if it’s distressing me as I’m still sensitive in many ways. I would never put it before hanging out with friends, but sometimes I have put it before homework or studying. Still, I consider being on sites like these to have been largely a positive thing that accompanied me throughout being 14 1/2 to being 17. Not to mention being exposed to insults and hatred online desensitized me. That may sound unpleasant, but I think it was positive. And of course, I’ve met many awesome people that I still keep in touch with. ^_^

I don’t remember really using the computer that much in high school, other than for school work. I’m pretty young, but most kids I knew liked to be outside or you know, doing drugs. No one wasted hours away on a computer, which everyone does now.

Yeah it wouldn’t have changed anything.

Wow, this is a great question. I think it may have made me actually able to connect with a huge aspect of the population which was only a fringe element in my school. I think it would have given me comfort and support to know I wasn’t alone as an overthinking, idealistic, neurotic, rebellious and alienated youth.

Well, since I went to high school in the seventies, and Al Gore hadn’t invented the Internet yet, it wouldn’t have changed anything. Having fluther BEFORE the Internet existed would make as much sense as going to the bus station to catch a flight to Hawaii.

I honestly wouldn’t care about fluther if I were still in high school. I had way to much going on in my life. Places to go, people to see. Now that I’m older and less social I have free time. Way too much free time.

I probably would have spent more time on here than doing my homework, lol.
Other than that I don’t think it would have made much of a difference in my life.

It’s hard to imagine. When I was in high school, computer classes were an elective and we only had an Atari at home. I was too busy chasing guys. I don’t think that it would have made much of a difference in my life at the time.

Though I joined this year, I got many good answers to questions I asked on fluther on doubts, like references and bibliography, when I was preparing my dissertation.

And more, I got a chance to meet you and many flutherites here.
