What is considered a fast knitting rate?

Asked by A_Beaverhausen (2443points) April 16th, 2009

to all of you knitters, how many inches would you say you can knit in an hour if you casted on 20? how many hours does it take you to finish a project?

This one is tough for me. I often knit when watching TV, movies, or a hockey game, and I’m always dropping stitches and having to stop and fix them.

Slow, real slow. If I’m focused, a scarf takes me over a week. :) I’ve been working on Amoebic’s fiance’s scarf for 2 years now, hahaha!

It depends on the size of the needles and the type of yarn. With big needles, a project can be started and finished in a few hours. With smaller needles, and a complicated pattern, such as lace, it would take days.

Your question doesn’t give enough information. You cast 20 stitches, and then what do you do with them? If I were making a pot holder, or coaster, which is about the size of 20 stitches, it would take me a couple of hours.

When I am sitting out by the pool all alone, I can usually knit about one inch (20 stitches across)every 15 minutes or so. When I am in the play room with my grandson, or the dog wants me to throw his ball every two minutes, it takes a lot, lot longer.

It depends a lot on the size of the needle and the type of yarn, as YARNLADY says. The type of stitch also matters. There’s a big difference between fingering weight yarn on size 1 needles making something lacy and bulky weight on 12s in a garter stitch.

I usually don’t do straight knitting because it’s not very interesting, so it usually depends on how much I’ve already established the pattern, too. Have I been knitting the same cables or lacy stitch for a while or is there a big change coming? Am I counting or is the pattern clearly seen without counting?

I can knit a crew sized sock in one evening and start on the second one (if I’m working on one at a time) or a glove can take two evenings. But I can also make a good-sized adult scarf in one late afternoon and evening.
