Camera questions are asked a lot on this site, and primarily,

http://dpreview.com
http://www.cnet.com

. . . are the good sites to start with. Dpreview is great because it allows you to select models and do a side-by-side comparison of features.

For what it’s worth the Canon PowerShot A570IS is currently in the lead as the best purchase in my book.

Canon PowerShot SD750 ($209)

I bought this for my girlfriend and was very impressed with the results and will fully vow for its capabilities. It can pull of shots far out of its price range. And the video quality was amazing as well.

Here’s a few of the first shots taken with the camera: 1 2 3
(Make note of the “widescreen” photo mode. Fun for a cinematic feel)
