Can I really burn discs that will make my broken laptop run?

Asked by SuperMouse (30845points) April 19th, 2009 from iPhone

When the tech at HP told me yesterday that I am going to have to ship my laptop back to the factory to have a new motherboard installed, he mentioned that there is a website where I can download a program that will make a messed up computer work. He said something about using the disc to run the computer and being able to get online. Is there really such a thing? If there is where can I find it?

Well it depends on what’s wrong with the computer.

If the operating system is no longer functioning, and you’re talking about a startup disc, then yes, it can help you get your computer up and running again. However, if there is a problem with your motherboard, no software will ever fix a hardware problem.

Windows startup discs can allow you to use networking and internet functions, as well as access some parts of your hard drive, but if the technician said that there is a problem with your motherboard, I’d expect that using a startup disc would be rather useless.

He might have been talking about a Linux distro like Ubuntu that acts as a LiveCD. Meaning that it will run off the CD in the optical drive. It can be handy if your installation of windows is messed up and you want to get your data off.

But if your motherboard is bad this won’t help. Does it do anything when you turn the computer on?

I’m agreed with johnpowell. I’m betting he was talking about a liveCD distro. Ubuntu is a great one but there are other like Knoppix.

I highly doubt an HP technician would recommend learning an entirely different operating system. My money is on a Windows startup disk.

You mentioned you need the laptop shipped in to get a new motherboard, no CD can fix that. Could you give more on what happened to your laptop?
