How can I make my email items scroll down, from newest to oldest, when I delete each email?

In my old email program, Ii was able to open with the newest emails at the top. I would start at the top, read, and delete as I went down. With my new Mac, my program scrolls UP, so that as I go through the new messages, it will jump back up to ones that I have already read and want to save. Then, before I can delete the next email, I have to manually scroll down after each email is opened. Can you help me?

May not be this simple but on mine if i click on the tab above date it resorts them either oldest to newest or newest to oldest. just noticed this question is pretty old did you ever figure it out.
