Anyone have experience starting their own non-profit?

Asked by syz (35938points) April 20th, 2009

I have a friend who’s trying to start a parrot resuce organization. She’s planning to apply for a 501(3)C, and I’m wondering if any Flutherites that may have been through the same process have any words of wisdom? Any pitfalls you have discovered?

I have helped start a no- kill animal shelter where I used to live.

It is a lot of red tape and required a lot of garage sales to drum up funds but it was worth it in the end.

Parrots really need a rescue as they often live longer than their owners.

I applaud your friend and would encourage her to just jump through every hoop one at a time till she reaches her goal.

I monitor non profits in our area. She will need a board of directors to finish applying for non profit status.
Also, I don’t mean to discourage her, but right now is probably the worse time economically for non profits. Hopefully she has some solid supporters who can help her through the start up.

My dad is not the founder, but he is the CEO of a non-profit, and does she have any business experience? A lot of times I hear people talking about wanting to start non-profits, but they lack a basic understanding. They don’t know how non-profits work. So has she done the research?
