Does Lil Wayne deserve to be on the cover of ROLLING STONE?

Asked by Ownage (296points) April 24th, 2009

I personally feel like this is an insult to the music industry. I always thought this magazine had some sort of prestige. This guy does not deserve to be crowned king of rap. I do admit some of his music is great, but all he does is make anything just to get his name out there.

I didn’t get a chance to read the article, so if someone could unlighten me….

Yes, as much as any other artist out there. Didn’t they also put Britney Spears on a cover? Rolling stone isn’t exactly cutting edge, it’s what’s popular. Every artist ever featured on a cover has people saying they aren’t that great. It’s personal opinion. I haven’t read the article but I assume by king of rap they mean not only is he a great performer, but has had basically everything he’s touched turn successful.

Sir. have you read anything in RS in the last 6–7 years? That magazine stopped being a serious place for music a while ago. it is largely a pop music mag cavorting to be hip and interesting. They also frequently have Fall Out Boy and many other musicians whom Weezy is more talented than.

Lil Wayne is pretty talented ill give him that and he does put in tons of work (hes like on every new song).

Maybe theyre just saying hes the best out now.

I see no reason he shouldn’t be on the cover. He is no worse or no better than a lot of artists these days.

@Triiiple

Ya hes talented in what he does. But when he is putting out so much shit just to get popularity\money I lose respect. Lil Waynes rock… Cmon.

Also just in the rap game theres so many better rappers out there. When you drop thousands of songs you run out of things to rhyme with. Overall Lil Wayne’s new lyrics are garbage (the stuff @monkey28rb listens too). There is much more entertaining (and creatitive) stuff out there. To be crowned the greatest rapper is over the top.

“Y’all Track stars a gunshot ran y’all off” – Wayne. Cmon..

Most artists (rap atleast) these days are garbage. All they do is soften their shit up to suck Billboards dick. What happened to the good rap from back in the day. Maybe just my oppinion…

The only thing I give lil wayne credit for is that he dropped thousands of songs, so some have to be good. If you dropped 1000 songs and 1\5 of them are good I guess you have 200 good songs, still alot. Other than that he pisses me off and gets WAY WAY WAY WAY more credit than he deserves.

Ohh @Tripple HAPPY HOUR!!!!!!!!!!

@Ownage – Michael Jordon missed a lot of shots to become the greatest basketball player of all time.

What rap artist would you like to see on the cover?

Id agree with Owange there, Lil Waynes lyrics are becoming a bit “tit tat, cat rat, yip yap” very childish and he is going for the same things, he is losing the big edge hes had in the rap game but then again could the be the reason he is now saying “im bored of rap and want to move into the rock genre”?

Im not a big fan of his Prom Queen song but id like to hear him out and see what he does, apparently he plays the guitar too. I can respect anyone who can tear up an instrument vs a computer/mic.

Yes Happy Hour!

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

I started losing respect for Rolling Stone’s choices when they put Britney Spears on the cover, several times I believe. Other offenders include Fergie, The Hills girls (barf), and the fucking Jonas Brothers. So yeah, Lil Wayne doesn’t surprise me, but it makes me want to hit someone.

Maybe Rolling Stone was shooting for the least common denominator in order to make money?

See this study that correlates SAT scores with favorite bands. The analysis shows that the people with the lowest SAT scores are Lil’ Wayne fans.

of course it’s hard not to roll your eyes at the validity of the study or the sweeping generalizations, but it was good for a chuckle – and rolling stone has sucked it, by and large, for at least 10 years now

@figbash I saw that study recently… very funny.
